Newly pregnant with 2nd child - step mum has scared me I’m going to lose the baby

I’m newly pregnant with my second child and absolutely overjoyed. I’m very early, maybe 5 weeks. We went round to tell parents and when we went to visit my Dad and my Step Mum (she is only 10 years older than me and more like a sister), she asked me in private whether it was planned. Which was fine

I told her it was planned of sorts, however we literally did ‘it’ once in my December cycle after deciding quite literally in the moment ‘yeah lets do it!’

We then didn’t get to do it again as my Husband had a nasty fall. Fast forward a few weeks and hey ho, that one time got me pregnant

She was like ‘oh ok’ well just don’t get your hopes up as one time may not mean a strong pregnancy as you only got one batch of swimmers! I was just like WHAT?!

Now obviously the logical part of my brain is telling me that it only takes one time. But the anxious part of me is thinking, well actually could she have a point. We also used a normal lube which don’t usually go hand in hand with conception so I’ve read, so I’m spiralling

Anybody else do it one time and have a successful pregnancy? I almost feel stupid for typing that, but I guess it’s these pregnancy hormones and unwarranted advice that are sending me over the edge of sanity….

thanks guys

Hahahaha.

Sorry to laugh at such a serious subject but what on earth does she think the spare swimmers do? They’re not cheerleaders! You don’t get a healthier more motivated embryo if you have a load of extra sperm sloshing around it shouting encouragement!

Hate to break it to you, but your stepmum is a total idiot with zero grasp of basic biology, please never put her in charge of anything important.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

That is a fantastic image though. All the wee extra sperms doing backflips and fist pumps...

CutiePatooties · 16/01/2024 10:10

Only took one time with both our girls and straightforward pregnancies and births for both. Both healthy etc I’ve no idea what your step mum is talking about...

Is she okay? 😂

HP89 · 16/01/2024 10:12

Bless her, not the sharpest tool in the box.

congratulations!

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 16/01/2024 10:14

The extra spunk doesn't go inside and start clapping the winner to help it grow. She's ridiculous.

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 16/01/2024 10:15

And congratulations x

Wotchaz · 16/01/2024 10:18

Sounds like you know logically that she’s talking nonsense…but if it’s any extra reassurance I’m currently 33 weeks with a “one-hit wonder”.

Whataretheodds · 16/01/2024 10:19

She is bonkers. By her logic you could have sex once each with 7 different men and they'd all make a genetic contribution to the embryo.

Obviously you know that not every pregnancy makes it out of the first trimester - some embryos just aren't right to continue - but the lube won't make it less likely to stick.

Mammma91 · 16/01/2024 10:21

She has been ridiculous op. Massive congratulations on baby no2! I’m also pregnant with dc2, after dtd only once! Now 28 weeks. Pay her no mind and look after yourself! I hope your husband has recovered from his fall also.

WotNoUserName · 16/01/2024 11:56

I did it one time with one of my pregnancies and ended up with twins!

Stephanieava · 16/01/2024 12:36

@allgrownupnow thanks for this :) Yeah my anxiety around pregnancy in general is pretty significant. I had a very traumatic first pregnancy - hyperemesis, placental rupture, waters breaking very early… luckily DC is 18 months now and perfect so it was all worth it. But has definitely put me on edge for this pregnancy too. So think her comment just pushed me over the edge I was already teetering on 🤦🏻‍♀️

@Mumoftwo1312 She is not much older than me and we are very close. I hope my children feel comfortable enough with me in the future to talk to me about anything they see fit

FYI for context I literally told her ‘yes but we only did it once! Can you believe it, I can’t believe how blessed we are. We feel so lucky!’

I do understand how conception works but I am in the thick of raging hormones, nausea, vomiting, and anxiety amongst other things, so I was just word vomiting for a bit of support I suppose

thanks

I mean she is completely bonkers haha but if it puts your mind at ease, we were exactly the same in both my pregnancies and all was good. Hope the vomiting eases for you soon x

Honestly if anything, too much semen can acimake it harder to conceive because it irritates the womb! (in horses, anyway 😳😂😂😂)

Snowydaysfaraway · 16/01/2024 15:10

Tell her yes what a shocker since you also kept 1 foot on the floor and had a bath straight afterwards... Both methods of not getting pregnant so the gossip told me as a teen...

midnights0 · 16/01/2024 15:12

Definitely doesn't work like that 😂 don't listen to her! Congratulations on your pregnancy!!

Off topic but out of interest, how old are you & your stepmother? I'm also a stepmother and I'm 10 years older than my stepdaughter and we're really close. DH is 40, I'm 28 & she is (nearly) 18.

WhatAFoolishFool · 16/01/2024 15:12

Wtaf? One sperm and one egg. Doesn’t matter how many millions of sperm are deposited, the one that fertilises it is the one that causes conception!

determinedtomakethiswork · 16/01/2024 18:03

So is she saying that more sperm is needed to create a healthy child? Does she not see how stupid that is?
