High prolactine? Vitex?

Hi everyone! We have been ttc since November, I did some private blood test (hertility) that came up with high prolactine (700ish). I just did another test through the NHS and it came up also high (496 this time). I have read online that having prolactin above 400 will cause difficulty conceiving. I also read that taking Vitex might help but I don't want to self medicate. Anyone has a similar experience? I don't think the NHS will help until I've been trying for at least a year. I'm 32 years old. Thanks!

Have they investigated why you have high prolactin? Ask for a referral to endocrinology. It will certainly have potential to cause fertility issues but needs investigating as to why it's high.

It's a very easy thing to fix once you get a prescription from an endocrinologist (I've been taking it 10 yrs now - my levels were higher and had no periods for yrs, once I took Cabergoline my cycles returned almost instantly)

I wouldn't mess around with Vitex personally.

Thank you very much for your reply. Thye haven't investigated because apparently 496 is right on the threshold of what they consider "normal range". But I am still concerned since it seems above 400 is not good when ttc. My periods are regular and I don't have any physical symptoms though. Do you think I should insist to the doctor? Thanks :)

Thank you for your reply. My periods have been always regular and I don't have any physical symptoms, so might just be a stress related spike? The fist time I tested it was early in the morning first thing after waking up. The second time I had to run to the appointment because I was running late so might have come out stressed because of that.
Why wouldn't you mess around with vitex? Is it dangerous? Thanks again, honestly it really helps being able to share this.

High prolactin can cause ovulation issues. If you have a regular cycle you’re probably not affected. My levels were the same and the GP referred me to an endocrinologist for closure. He just did a couple of quick tests, I was already pregnant again by the time I saw him so obviously was ovulating so he didn’t recommend any further treatment.

I was diagnosed with PCOS as a result of a blood test that showed high prolactin. We werent even ttc at the time so nobody mentioned having to wait for a year. GP organised referral to endocrinology team, who did further work and scans etc. That also opened up some additional support in terms of meds and referrals onto the fertility clinic a couple of years on when we WERE ready to ttc. So i agree with pp that def worth pushing GP on onward referral.

Are you ovulating? If you are and your periods are regular then maybe it's not high enough to be an issue. I'm not an expert but know someone with high prolactin whose fertility was affected - they didn't have regular periods though. Once they started on the medication, they conceived easily.

Thank you very much for your input. I already contacted my GP and they're gonna follow up. I am very encouraged by your story!

I have only tracked two cycles so far with strips and the first one was unclear (the line didn't go too dark but apparently I should have tested more often to be sure). The second time the LH surge was more clear but it only went up to about 85%. The rest of my hormones came out normal and my cycles are regular. I have just called the GP and booked an appointment to follow up. Thank you everyone for your input! Means a lot.

I had very high prolactin levels and this caused my periods to stop completely. If you still have regular periods it is less likely to be an issue I think.

Thank you for all the replies. I have an appointment on Saturday and I will update the progress here in case someone out there has the same issue and it helps. I bought Vitex but reading about it put me off trying it so I'll leave that alone.
