Hycosy advice?

Can anyone tell me how painful they found this? I see it’s described as ‘mild discomfort’ which gives me pause as I seem to remember my Mirena insertion being described in the same way!!

can anyone help?

thanks!

Hi @Pupsandturtles I had a Hycosy in December and I was so anxious and had really built it up in my head and it wasn’t as bad as I was anticipating! The speculum was fine and there was some mild cramping when they put the balloon in - the only painful bit was when they put the dye through (it felt like quite intense period pains back to back) and I did have to really breathe through this but as soon as I thought it was getting to be too much it was over! There are two people in the room doing the procedure which is really helpful as one can talk to you / help you through it. I’ve never had a coil so can’t compare but my advice would be to take some paracetamol and ibuprofen before and don’t go back to work straight after - you may feel absolutely fine but I felt quite woozy / light headed (apparently very common). Nothing some chocolate and a lie down couldn’t sort out though! Best of luck!

Babeglas · 10/01/2024 17:16

I didn't feel a thing honestly and I'm a wimp! I need sedated at the dentist for a filling!!!

I got myself so worked up about it, I did however take 2 cocodamol before hand 😅 everyone is different though but mines was nothing worse than a smear x

Pupsandturtles · 11/01/2024 10:08

Just in case someone finds this- it wasn’t as bad as I expected! But I did take 2 codeine and a Valium beforehand 😂 It definitely was better than my Mirena. I had a really nice Dr who talked me through the whole thing, which helped a lot. I realise it’s different for everybody, but the Dr told me that most of her patients are pleasantly surprised by the pain levels. Thanks for your help @Babeglas @hopelesslydevotedtottc !

@Pupsandturtles glad you found it okay!! I think the build up is always the worst bit. I had read far too many horror stories online and had really freaked myself out unnecessarily! Did you get given the all clear?

Pupsandturtles · 11/01/2024 10:50

@hopelesslydevotedtottc yep, no issues with tubes or uterus. So that’s a relief!! Did they find anything in yours?

I have a very low tolerance for pain, I found it really quite uncomfortable. They will take breaks if you need them to.

I had a lovely nurse with me and she could tell I was in pain and offered to hold my hand. I think I nearly squeezed it off bless her!

hopelesslydevotedtottc · 11/01/2024 10:55

@Pupsandturtles yes I got the all clear too! I heard it can give you a bit of a fertility ‘boost’ as even if your tubes are all clear etc it can flush things out - have read lots of post Hycosy success stories on Mumsnet so really hoping we can be one of them 🤞🤞🤞

So glad it wasn't painful for you too! Although I think the codiene definitely helps haha!

I agree but boosting fertility. I had one in the November and fell pregnant in the February, sadly ended in ectopic though x

@Babeglas @hopelesslydevotedtottc @Mrgrinch sorry if this is TMI, but what did you notice after your HYCosy? I can’t tell if I’m having EWCM and ovulating early, or if it’s just the dye….

I can't remember to be honest. Nothing sticks out for me, maybe take an ovulation test? Xxx

hopelesslydevotedtottc · 14/01/2024 00:58

I agree with @Pupsandturtles do an OPK if you’re not sure - to be honest I think the Hycosy may have thrown my ovulation slightly - I normally get lots of ewcm but I got very little last month and I also had a relatively short cycle and lots of spotting pre period which may have been completely unrelated but I wonder if the Hycosy made a difference…?!

CatmumTTC · 23/01/2024 18:21

Hi All,

Jumping on this thread as I've just had my HyCosy today on CD 8 - was quite painful but manageable - I think because I've had loop diathermy before my cervix was harder to get through because that was the worst part for me, the dye wasn't too bad.

But the consultant (the person doing the procedure, not sure if that has to be a consultant tbh) said not to have intercourse for the rest of this cycle. I thought this was strange because all the advice in the leaflets say its fine to do after the procedure. And online advice, including advice sheets from other treatment centres seem to suggest it might even give you a fertility boost and bonking is encouraged.

I wish I had asked more questions but I was in pain, and now I want to know why they would say to write off this cycle.

Pupsandturtles · 23/01/2024 21:23

@CatmumTTC im no expert, but they didn’t say that to me. I haven’t heard that before….

OP posts:
hopelesslydevotedtottc · 26/01/2024 08:44

@CatmumTTC I also wasn’t told that! I was told not to have sex BEFORE the procedure as they can’t do it if there is any chance at all you could be pregnant, but nothing about afterwards…

FlyOnTheWall89 · 26/01/2024 09:05

I was very worried I'd pass out as I'm not great with that sort of thing but truly I barely felt it. I got pregnant the following month following 15 months of trying. I'm not trying for no 2 and will have another one in 6 months if no luck at that point because it seemed to help us I think x

hopelesslydevotedtottc · 26/01/2024 11:01

@FlyOnTheWall89 congrats on your pregnancy! I was really hoping to be one of those Hycosy success stories but no luck so far…

FlyOnTheWall89 · 26/01/2024 14:21

@hopelesslydevotedtottc you've got another few months yet. I had it before ovulation, didn't get pregnant that month, it was the next. My daughter is 11 months today. I do genuinely believe that help. I was incredibly shocked. We had / have I presume MFI. My tubes were clear.

jellyfish2210 · 07/03/2024 09:53

Hi. Did anyone get pregnant yet? I had my HyCoSy on Tuesday and have had positive OPKs yesterday and today so I expect I'm ovulating today/tomorrow, this will be cycle 14 of TTC.

Unicornsparklez · 07/03/2024 10:03

I sadly didn't get pregnant after mine. And we've still failed to conceive since then however a work colleague who had hers fell pregnant the first cycle after having it done. She's since fallen pregnant again, shortly after the birth of her first and is about to have 2 babies under 1 year old 😂 she went from being unable to conceive to a pending mother of 2! So I'm sending you all the luck for this cycle for you! ✨

Pupsandturtles · 07/03/2024 10:19

Yes, but I had another chemical. I’m being treated for reproductive immunology issues though, so I doubt it had much to do with the Hycosy…

OP posts:
CatmumTTC · 07/03/2024 10:41

Not pregnant yet but this is my first full cycle after HyCosy and first time I've ever recorded an LH surge on OPKs and I'm feeling quite different this month so perhaps the HyCosy helped wake my ovaries up and got me ovulating properly. Certainly going to be an anxious TWW this time!
