Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) and TTC

Can anyone offer advice on ttc with hyperthyroidism?

Recent blood tests show very low TSH (0.05) and high T3 and T4. Waiting for endocrinologist appt in Jan.

Been trying for 2nd for over 12 months. Had miscarriage at 8 weeks’ in July.

Most info online relates to hypo rather than hyper. If you’ve had overactive thyroid, did you carry on ttc or wait until medication brought levels down - if so, how long did that take?

Hello! Sorry if this reply is a little late, but I saw no one has replied and from being in your position last May, I understand the frustration of only finding info about hypothyroidism.
I was diagnosed with graves disease last May, after nearly 2 years of ttc, in that time I had one chemical. My tsh levels were undetectable (under 0.01).
I was given 3 options for treatment:

  1. Carbimazole tablets, 2. Radioiodine treatment, 3. Thyroidectomy. All of which have their positives and negatives so your consultant should go through this with you in more detail. I wouldnt want to give advice on this as it should be down to you.

I decided with the radioiodine. For me, it was more perminent and less risk of it becoming overactive again. Also, you can ttc whilst on levythyroxine if it does go underactive. Im not suggesting thats the best option for all, but it was the best option for me.
Currently, I'm in the 6 month wait as you shouldnt get pregant until 6 months after RAI. I had to self isolate for a week and have 2 weeks off too as well as other restrictions, so that is also to consider.
My consultant advised its more favourable to treat an underactive thyroid than over, especially when ttc. Ive also been told it is absolutely possible to have a healthy pregnancy once your thyroid is balanced.
It is so disheartening when told you have to take a break when ttc, but there are options.
I wish you all the best, it might not have been what you wanted to hear but thats my journey so far with hyperthyroidism x

Edit: forgot to add, I was told not to ttc whilst on carbimazole / whilst my thyroid was overactive.
You may be given different advice by your consultant dependent on the cause of the thyroid problem.

Hi, I was diagnosed with Graves a few years ago. I was TTC at the time - I was prescribed propryuracil as it's safe to take in pregnancy and breastfeeding. My levels got under control fairly quickly - I was lucky I had private healthcare so could fast track appointments and follow ups. I'm now pregnant (IVF pregnancy - we couldn't progress until levels were under control - I've had a long fertility journey (other issues not all thyroid but I don't know how much of a part that played before it was detected) and still on propryuracil (I've been on and off it the last couple of years depending on my TSH levels). All fine and I'm having bloods checked every 4 weeks. I know it is very frustrating but risk of miscarriage is much higher so it is advisable to wait until you are confident your levels are in the normal range. Good luck

Thank you for both replying - really appreciate that. Congratulations on your pregnancy Karmaismycat!

I’m still waiting for my appt with an endo consultant in Jan but I did have one more blood test two weeks ago which then showed higher TSH (0.8) but now low T4 (under the normal level - when previously was really high) - so I suspect my levels are fluctuating a lot.
