Hi ladies

I was told by consultant at the Eputhat in the future if we got pregnant, I will be offered progestrogen to help with growth, but I have some anxiety as it was mentioned it is only taken as a pessary vaginally, is it possible at all to take oral progestrogen? Did explain
to the doc about my fear and anxieties, one of the docs we spoke to a few weeks ago understand my anixiety but this one said no alternative to the pessary, is this true? feeling hopeful for the future but nervous about this. Does it hurt (never had internal examination/pessarys or any kind of internal test)

@Neelamj The progesterone I've been prescribed following my miscarriage is a pessary (cyclogest) it can be inserted vaginally or anally. I took it for my pregnancy earlier this year but unfortunately it was not viable.

Honestly it doesn't hurt at all (it's just messy and quite inconvenient) If there is underlying anxiety about inserting a foreign object such as a tampon/smear test etc then I would suggest maybe looking into counselling or hypnotherapy to ease your concerns as unfortunately any future pregnancies will likely involve internal examinations. Best of luck 🤞

I am pregnant after two back to back miscarriages and taking the cyclogest. It seems the only options are to insert into vagina or bottom. My consultant said vaginally is best. I've been on them for 2 weeks and find it fine. I just make sure i do the first one at bedtime after my last wee! And the next one very early, so I am laying down for awhile and sleeping after. I just wear period knickers to bed, dont find the process particularly messy or anything. Wishing you luck xx

Not sure if its helpful, but vitex/ agnus castus is a natural supplement that has been shown to boost progesterone. Maybe a back up plan if you find you can't get past your anxiety.

I'm on progesterone after two losses, it's an oral tablet I take twice a day called Duphaston. I'm not in the UK so can't tell you if it really isn't an option there, but oral progesterone does exist!

I didn't realize you posted this on two different threads, I was wondering where my reply had disappeared to!

Neelamj · 01/12/2023 19:14

@Sez281 @Milamight @YearoftheRabbit23 Thank you so much for your replies ladies, helpful knowing what to expect, as it does not hurt I will try anything to help us have a better chance in the future, hopefully I am able to do so.

yes I posted twice to ge as many replies or responses, walked out of epu feeling super anxious lol

@WolfMother326 thank you for that info I may look into that if I am not able to do the pessaries

@Sez281 deffo looking into counselling in the future as my anxiety takes over and I am not able to do simple internal examinations or anything like that

@Neelamj No problem, I know it can be so overwhelming leaving the epau 😢 But yeah I definitely think some sort of counselling to help ease your anxiety would be a great idea going forward as hopefully you get your BFP again soon and can start the progesterone x

Hi @Neelamj just wanted to say that I’m in a similar position - I’ve had two miscarriages recently and am just starting on progesterone. Took the first pessary yesterday and had spent all day absolutely dreading it, but it wasn’t as bad as I expected. I took it rectally and whilst it wasn’t comfortable, it wasn’t painful either. Once it was in you could kind of forget about it.

whateveryouwantmetosay · 01/12/2023 23:35

I also took progesterone with my second a third pregnancy. It was via pessary and I don't believe there is an alternative. I hope you get the support you need to overcome the anxiety.

@MKWarrier @whateveryouwantmetosay thank you ladies, feeling hopeful :)

@Sez281 thank
you :) really hope so :)

Progesterone is given for IVF pregnancies as standard so I’ve had it several times, doesn’t hurt at all used vaginally. Unfortunately though it doesn’t actually help — recent studies have found it might mask miscarriage but it doesn’t stop them. I had a missed miscarriage while taking it. In many ways it’s just given as a placebo.https://evidence.nihr.ac.uk/alert/routine-use-of-progesterone-does-not-prevent-miscarriage/

Routine use of progesterone does not prevent miscarriage

Evidence from a trial covering 4000 women in the UK suggests that the use of progesterone does not prevent miscarriage.
