Sylvia ferning to detect pregnancy, anyone?

I have just discovered Sylvia ferning. I’ve added pictures to describe what it is. I happen to have a microscope at home so decided to give it a try and to my suprise I had ferning at 12dpo/cd25. Ovulation was confirmed at cd14 with bbt and opks.

I knew it could be used to predict ovulation but didn’t realise it could also be used to detect pregnancy. I am finding this difficult to believe since ferning microscopes can be bought for about £20, i imagine it would put pregnancy test companies out of business if it was true. I wondered if any one had any personal experiences of it. There’s not a lot of info online about it.

It’s not letting me attach pics for some reason. I’ll try and add them later.

Also, I have done many pregnancy tests and they are bfn.

Can't see a pic but it's certainly impossible.

Fertilised egg in theory - though not likely. But pregnancy is a different definition entirely.

Opks don’t work for me (pcos/long cycles) so I charted and used a ferning microscope. Temp and ferning always matched ewcm for me, so I am sure ferning can help with hormone detection.

This said no experience of detection of pg with it, but good luck op!!

Are you using cheapie pg tests? Might be worth getting a proper one for this!

I was very perplexed, and googled, and can now see you mean saliva, not Sylvia!

PG tests are about £1 unless you go for the fancy schmancy ones. Unless people are having 20 babies I don't see why they would want to faff around with a £20 microscope instead of just waiting a couple of weeks, weeing on a stick and binning it. Also IDK how this works but if you're putting any part of a microscope up your vag or anywhere near your cervix, you really need to ensure it's fully sterile. The gold standard for that is an autoclave, which costs a bit more than £20.

I am perpetually baffled by the amount of people incapable of waiting 2 weeks to know if they're having a baby who do PG tests too early and then complain about the results.

I can only assume you either have no experience of wanting a baby so badly that it almost becomes an obsession, or a lack of empathy for those who do.

Well that makes a bit more sense. At least this new fad doesn't involve putting things where the sun doesn't shine.

It won’t let me post pics for some reason but here is a link to what I read yesterday..

I was TTC for 7 years for DC1 as I've said in many posts in the past while supporting women who are struggling in AIBU/relationships/pregnancy boards. If I'd dicked around testing early every month for 84+ months instead of being patient and waiting for AF, I would have spent a lot of money on wasted tests. What I'm VERY against is people whipping other people up into a frenzy on these boards and wasting loads of money (and emotional energy) when disappointment is coming. A lot of bad science preys on women TTC or taking a long time to conceive and it's not unempathetic to tell people when something sounds like a massive waste of money/total crap.

There's a saying about the word assume that applies here. 🤷‍♀️

Dan521 · 30/11/2023 10:46

Ok so my phone has autocorrected the word saliva and it will not allow me edit the post but thanks for pointing it out. 🙈

@SisterMichaelsHabit it is a compound monocular microscope that I have used, it would not fit in my vagina. The point I was making is that there are devices available online for £20, designed to detect fertility via ferning patterns. It appears you are a minority who has spent less than £20 in an attempt to conceive, for that I applaud you.

@MissHavershamReturns thank you I’ll have a look at those links.

For those who are interested - I looked last night out of interest and the ferning pattern appeared. Upon further research, it is recommended that it should be used as soon as you wake up so food and drink etc are less likely to impact the results. I have looked again this morning before food or drink and the ferning has gone.

@SisterMichaelsHabit i am not whipping any one up into a frenzy, I am interested in the potential science behind this and asked for personal experiences. Evidently this does not apply to you.

This method is also used to detect premature rupture of the membranes during pregnancy.
