If you have a very short cycle, when can you test for pregnancy?

My cycles have always been fairly short, between 24 and 26 days, but very regular. However in the last 6 months I have had several cycles that have only been 3 weeks between AF's. We have only been TTC for the last cycle but today I feel like AF is about to start (very bloated, irritable, tender breasts and generally feeling crap). Would it been too early to test?

With ds I got a BFP on day 24. Is the likelyhood of getting a BFP on day 21 non-existent even if I were pregnant, or if you do have short cycles would the hormone levels be high enough to be detected?

Hi tutu,

My cycle is about the same length as yours, and I once asked my doctor this very question. His reply was that getting an accurate result depends not on how long your cycle is, but how long ago you ovulated/conceived relative to when you are testing. So, for example, if you ovulate on day 11 then you might just get a positive result on day 21 (assuming also that you use a very sensitive test). However, if you ovulated on day 14, you are unlike to get an accurate result as there will not have been enough time for implantation and a build up of HCG.

Hope that helps. Best of luck!

Thank you, I will sit on my hands and try not to buy any tests for another couple of days (might not need them).

any idea of when you ovulated?

tutu100 · 12/03/2008 20:52

I think around day 9.

tutu, 14 days from day 9 should be sufficient, possibly earlier but you might get a false negative and have to try a few days' later.

From what I remember, what determines the length of your cycle is when you ovulate. The time after ovulation (known as the luteal phase) tends to stay the same, but it is the time before ovulation (the follicular phase?) varies from cycle to cycle, some women more than others.

Of course, it is also possible to not ovulate during a cycle, but still have a period - just to add to the confusion.

Hope this one is your lucky one.

Thanks. I'll wait till the weekend to buy a test and then I'll try not to do it until Monday.

It's weird cos I got pregnant with ds the first month we tried I feel more expectant to do the same this time when I know that it is more likely to take a couple of months.

I'm just very impatient

I know this was a long time ago, but for anyone new looking at this thread, I got a BFP 18 days after my LMP. So definitely possible to test positive early on. I don't think that's super normal though.

Is it possible to conceive with a 23 day regular cycle? We've been trying for months and sometimes I feel like I do conceive but miscarry b4 implantation. Has anyone successfully conceived a healthy little one with a short cycle ?

Lilice · 16/11/2019 14:02

Do you know which day you ovulate? Ive read that lutheal phase needs to be a minimum of 10 days for a successful implentation to occur. Mine is just 10 days, maybe less. My cycle are around 25/26 days. I have two children but I think my cycles have got shorter since then. Im not sure as I've never tracked before. But this month I started to take some supplements in the hope of extenting my lutheal phase. I dont know yet if it's working, AF due in a few days so we'll see

LoyalityRStarling · 16/11/2019 14:42

I heard the same thing about the LP but I have no idea when I ovulate and my cycles are 23 days regular. I use apps like flo and me and my love have sex several times in the predicted fertile windows but AF always shows her face. Now I'm about to start taking vitamins to try and lengthen my cycle... Wish me luck.

Lilice · 16/11/2019 15:31

I also use an app to track my cycle but I always ovulate later than what the app says. So I use opk to know when I'm ovulating. Have you tried the smep (sperm meets egg plan)?

Lilice · 16/11/2019 15:31

I use the same app as you by the way

Lilice · 16/11/2019 15:32

And of course I wish you all the luck in the world! Xx

LoyalityRStarling · 16/11/2019 15:44

Smep ? No I haven't and never heard of it. Enlighten me plz. 😊

I followed it last month and again this month so hasnt proven successful yet but the plan does make sense. However seeing you have a short cycle, you will have to tweak the days. It says to start trying on cd8 but in your place I would start much earlier, maybe a couple of days after your af

Hi @LoyalityRStarling. I have a very regular 23 day cycle too. Been ttc for 10 long months, with not even a hint of a bfp so far! I track ovulation using opks, which suggest I regularly ovulate around day 11. Anyway, in case it’s of any reassurance to you, I’ve mentioned my concerns about my short cycle to both a GP and a fertility specialist. Neither seemed to regard the cycle length as a major concern - was told that 23 days is still in the ‘normal’ range and the fact that the cycle’s regular and hormone markers are consistent with ovulation are positive signs.

Wishing you the very best of luck!

I know this is from a year ago... Any luck conceiving? I have a short cycle, anywhere from 20-26 days with an average of 22-23 days. We tried for 3 months before I decided to look into my luteal phase using urine ovulation kits. I discovered I had a short luteal phase and read research that vitamin C could help lengthen this phase. I took 1500 mg vitamin C for a cycle and that was the month I got pregnant - with identical twins none the less! I truly believe the vitamin c is what helped me get pregnant. Best of luck to you!

Hi @Ne0n this post was a while back now, but I also have a 23 day cycle and its always bang on time, I have 1 child and was pregnant but unfortunately lost it :( so yes it very possible to concieve with a shorter cycle. Although I have been trying for a little while as after losing one, its made me want another one so bad but its been pretty differcult. I am 34 now so thats probably making it a bit more harder. Have you had any luck?
