Periods Post Mirena Removal

Hi All,

I had a mirena coil removed in February and have had two MMC since. One at 10ish weeks in July and another in October also at 10ish weeks.

I had the mirena for 7 years and it was changed in the middle. I had no periods while on the Mirena. Prior to the mirena, in my mid 20s, my periods were quite heavy, painful and would last 5 days with tampon changes required throughout the days.

Now my period is very light, 2 or 3 days at the most and for the majority of the period, I could get away without a pad or tampon if I wanted to. I don’t really have any cramps, I don’t get any spots, my boobs don’t swell and hurt like they used to.

i feel like my hormones are dormant. I don’t seem to struggle to get pregnant but I don’t stay pregnant.

Has anyone else experienced light periods post Mirena?

Am I crazy for thinking my very light periods and lack of hormonal symptoms could be linked to my miscarriages?

thanks

I'm very sorry for your losses OP.

I have had a mirena twice and both times my periods were straight back to normal post-removal so I didn't have light periods post-mirena.

Maybe worth asking the GP to check your hormone levels?

Thanks @MumLass how long did you have your coils for? Im wondering if 7 years was maybe too long and I should have had a break.

The first one about 4 years, then a break of a year then another one for 3 years

@MumLass thanks.

has anyone else had this?

Wondering how things have gone for you, HashB? I’ve had my mirena out for 3 months and have 1 day little periods. Don’t expect to be able to conceive.

Hi @Breac
It feels odd reading this old post. I conceived again in November, probably at the same time of posting this, and I’m currently 8 days overdue with a baby boy. So it did work out for me.
I have no idea what my periods will be like post baby, I was half worried I was perimenopause, but we shall see!

@HashB congratulations! That’s very exciting news. Thanks for the lovely update. It’s really reassuring to see other women who’ve been in the same boat bouncing back ok from the Mirena 💚 best of luck with your birth and the new addition to your family

I had my Mirena coil removed in April. Soon after I had a brown period which was expected. Then the next two normal periods after that were heavier and red. Then July’s was lighter but still normal, and August/September it has been very light (3 days) and brown not red. I am worried the coil has affected my body’s ability to grow a thick lining.

@SRH i find it interesting that there isn’t more info available on this; as looking at this forum, it seems to happen to quite a few people. I hope that reading the good news stories on this thread have reassured you. I’ve decided to go speak to a gynae about it if mine is still weird after 6 months

Just leaving an update for any future people who come across this thread and might be in a similar situation:
after having my mirena removed in May 2025, and half hearted 1-2 day periods after that, I conceived in April 2026 ☺️ so far things are looking normal and healthy. Periods never came back to what I considered to be “normal” but still managed to conceive with time. Had started to panic after 6 months and tried acupuncture for fertility (which I don’t think did anything). I had also gotten my oestrogen, progesterone, thyroid and AMH tested in Jan, which were all looking pretty normal. The gynaecologist I saw told me to give it a year (he had said give it 6 months when he was removing my mirena 🙄).

No idea whether it was anything to do with the mirena and uterine lining thickness that contributed to it taking longer than I expected, but I hope if you’re reading this, and in a similar boat, you’ll take some reassurance from this. The gynaecologist had said that a next step could be to do an ultrasound to measure the uterine lining at the appropriate time of the month, but it didn’t come to that. When I questioned him on the research he was adamant that there has been an abundance of long-term population level studies on the mirena which show no negative impact on fertility. My suspicion is that when they tell us “6 months”, that may be how long it takes for a younger woman to return to a normal cycle, but perhaps for those of us in our mid/late 30s, it takes longer (and messaging should be adapted, if so!)
