Has anyone ever had the blocked tubes fertility test?

I’m due to have the scan next week to see if my tubes are blocked after some infertility issues and pain I get on one side. But due to my bmi the Manchester clinic won’t take me, so I’m having it down at London.

im due to drive there and back in a day but they said it “shouldn’t be more painful than a smear” and “I might get some mild cramping so to take paracetamol”. Which sounds like the past advice from a mirena coil and that was awful 😬

has anyone got any experience of this and realistically how much it hurts please?

thanks! 🥰

I had it years ago . Was probably equivalent pain of coil change . Fine after.

FourStringsNoWaiting · 20/11/2023 20:07

I've had it. I found it was uncomfortable rather than painful, I did follow the advice about painkillers so maybe that's why. Having DH with me to chat nonsense and keep me distracted definitely helped

HarpieDuJour · 20/11/2023 20:08

I've had it, I think it was called a lap & dye. I had a general anaesthetic for it though. I was up and about very quickly, but I farted like an elephant for a few hours!

I don't remember too much pain, but I was very tired afterwards. A long drive followed by surgery and then another long drive doesn't sound like a great idea. Is there any way you could stay overnight near the hospital afterwards, and then go home the next day?

My news was good, but even that was hugely emotional for me, which contributed to the tiredness I'm sure. If (God forbid) your news is less good, then driving home in an emotional state could be disastrous. If you can't stay over, is there someone who can go with you and drive you home?

SpuytenDuyvil · 20/11/2023 20:08

If you are having a hysteroscopy, I would take nurofen or something like that. I don't get any relief from paracetamol, personally. It's not fun, but it's not a long test. I felt quite a sharp pop in my fallopian tube on the right when the dye went into it, but that was kind of it. I bled a little, after, but it was really all fine. BTW, my BMI was a little high, but that didn't affect the test. I did have a baby after, although it was nearly 7 years later. I married late.

muddlingthrou · 20/11/2023 20:10

I found it excruciating when they pushed the dye through, but was fine afterwards. Definitely take ibuprofen beforehand. Good luck!

@HarpieDuJour i can’t go under for it 🥲 I’ve got to be awake because my bmi is over 35 (that’s the deal with London lol you can still have it but no going under!)

i wish i could get a hotel but I can’t be away 😭 and my husband can’t take the day off. My dad offered to take it off and drive me though if I need so I was trying to work out realistically if I’d need that

thank you @FourStringsNoWaiting and @Starlightstarbright2 too 🥰

@SpuytenDuyvil thanks! Not a hysterectomy just the dye in then scan to see how clear they are. And that’s also great to know! Thank you!

@muddlingthrou eee I hadn’t even considered the dye going in to be painful!
😂🙈

I had it done in February and had zero pain.
Only uncomfortable thing was being legs akimbo with bright lights but it was a breeze.

I hope it goes well for you!

Oh & I went alone. Drove myself there and back with no bother.

HarpieDuJour · 20/11/2023 20:14

I would say you need someone with you. That's a long way from home to be having such an important test alone.

Same for me - lap and dye under GA. Tummy was a wee bit sore afterwards: "Oh, that was the D&C we gave you as an encore." That was more than 20 years ago.

Had another D&C last year - no pain at all - much better pain relief these days.

usererror99 · 20/11/2023 20:18

I've had it done twice: fine for me. Mild discomfort only and drove myself there and back from the appointments.

That being said I didn't have blockages - I heard a woman in the exam room before me having a traumatic time so for those that have a difficult to locate cervix or blockages find it a lot more painful

I've never known anyone to be put under for it - it's literally a 10 minute procedure and doesn't need someone there holding you're hand

GeorgeBeckett · 20/11/2023 20:19

I had an HSG - dye then x-ray. Took paracetamol and ibuprofen beforehand. Bit uncomfortable but not worse than quite a rummagey smear. Little bit of cramping afterwards but fine.

Conceived DS1 the very next month after 2 years of trying. Must have been cobwebs up there or something!

Good luck OP!

BlueSuedeBoobs · 20/11/2023 20:23

If it’s the HSG procedure I had this done as part of fertility investigations a long time ago and I had no pain at all with it. I also now have two children as a result of it so everything crossed for you

GlamGiraffe · 20/11/2023 20:24

I had one. Both tubes completely blocked.
I can honestly say it wasn't painful at all. Uncomfortable being in a somewhat undignified position in a brightly lit room for an extended period, but painful, not at all. Mine took ages as the gave doses if iv Buscopan to try to get the tubes to relax to allow more dye to flow through.
Good luck. Hope it gives good news. X

hartof · 20/11/2023 20:41

I passed out during mine because of the pain, it took a long time for my blood pressure to get back to normal and I didn't feel great for the rest of the day. I wouldn't have wanted to travel

hartof · 20/11/2023 20:43

Oh I should add, I only had one tube as I'd had an ectopic the year previous. I also had to have my cervix clamped as it kept moving. So mine was possibly made worse by these factors

Dinosaurus86 · 20/11/2023 21:27

For me it was painful, but just while they were doing it - I walked home (quite a distance) afterwards.

crankit · 20/11/2023 21:40

I didn't have blocked tubes, it wasn't bad but it did hurt for a minute when the dye went in, like a huge deep period cramp
Spotting afterwards

SpuytenDuyvil · 20/11/2023 23:10

@KittyAllTheWay I didn't say hysterECtomy--I said hysterOSCOPY. Not the same thing at all. It's the name of the procedure where they run dye through the cervix and uterus through the fallopian tubes to see if they are patent, which means that the ovum can travel from the ovary through the fallopian tube into the uterus so it can be fertilized
