Help, I ate raw sushi during the two week wait. Will this affect my chances of getting pregnant or cause harm to the baby?

No.

Was the fish from a reputable establishment or did you walk in and think "this is how I die"

Mummymummy89 · 18/11/2023 13:48

I think it only causes harm if you get food poisoning. Ie you'd have symptoms.

If you feel fine, you've not got food poisoning so it's all fine

It was a reputable sushi place. I ate a poke bowl which had raw tuna. I've never gotten sick from eating sushi from this place but a little worried. I will monitor and see if I develop any symptoms. Hopefully not.

Its fine, i ate it in pregnancy as well.

how do we think japanese women survive pregnancies? same as french women and their cheese and pate.

generally if the fish is frozen before preparing then its safe so most chains/supermarket ones would be safe to eat as they make sushi with pre frozen fish

Nothing will make a difference that early. I ate sushi all throughout my pregnancy, was told by the midwife UK sushi is fine to eat when pregnant.

I ate supermarket sushi throughout my pregnancy , no issues at all

To be honest, in Japan most pregnant mums do stop eating raw fish. Raw fish is part of Japanese cuisine but you don't eat it at every meal: things like steamed fish, stir fry meat, rice, noodles, steamed egg etc etc are all eaten more often as they are cheaper.

Similarly I was at a birthday party thrown by a Spanish mum and she had laid on delicious Spanish hams etc from their recent trip to grandparents - she came up to me as soon as I arrived and warned me not to touch them as I'm PG.

Basically, you get cautious people everywhere, it's not just a cultural thing in the uk.

Personally I'm much more on the "eh, it'll be FINE" end of the spectrum but I'd be considered risk-taking in those countries too.

Just ti be clear, I agree with @Covetthee that previously-frozen raw fish is fine.

But it's not particularly common practice to freeze raw fish in Japan and so pregnant mums do generally abstain from eating raw fish there.

Thank god I didn't get sick. I'm very new to the ttc journey for baby#1. Google can be a bit scary and strict on what you should and shouldn't eat. Hearing from your own experiences and knowledge I feel more relieved and will probably stay cautious of the food I eat but also not freak out if I accidentally eat the wrong thing. I'm not even pregnant yet. I'm 7dpo with absolutely no symptoms so I doubt this is my month.
