Does a new donor make a difference?

Pretty much what it says on the tin!

It took two rounds of IVF for my glorious little one to join me . While everything looked great on paper - my fertilisation rates were atrocious and there was never any indication why.

The donor I used for my daughter is no longer donating so I’ve selected a new donor. Did anyone find that changing donors made a difference??

It can, but not always. We changed donor and still haven't had success.

You can ask the clinic about the sample, if you haven't already. With our first donor, the quality was only just good enough - they were happy to use it but it only just met their criteria for acceptable. We had 4 unsuccessful IUI rounds with him. With our current donor, the quality is a lot better, but still hasn't worked after a few goes (and I'm under 35 with no known issues - issue is male factor).

Sorry not to be more helpful. My conclusion after 4 years of fertility treatment is that some of it is still a stab in the dark and a bit of luck really, but you can get some indication of the sample quality and change if it's not brilliant.

My first donor was one of my clinics in house bank's most successful but 5 cycles and just one miscarriage/4 negative cycles I changed and got pregnant first time and then first time again for a sibling. Clinic said sometimes one donor just works more for someone than another

Thanks all! It’s all a bit of miracle and magic - and it can all be so heartbreaking.

Ill definitely ask my clinic more when they get the samples ~ I know it’s MOT they recommend but so was my last donor.

@nutellacreppe ~ hope it works out soon!
@PNDshame - that’s encouraging- maybe it’ll work that way for me! I always wanted a kid with red hair so maybe my eggs were just holding out 😂😂 (although my little one has the most gorgeous blonde curls I wouldn’t change for anything )

Yes definitely ask your clinic when they thaw it. So much can happen in the freezing/ thawing process as well and the quality can change, it's about more than just the MOT before it's frozen. My clinic look at the motility, morphology etc. once it's thawed and will tell me those details if I ask. Even within donors with the same MOT it can vary quite a lot.
