Hi

I have been ttc my 2nd dc for 7 months now with no luck.

However when I started ttc my af went wacky and disapeared for 3 months.
A blood test to check hormones and also thyroid function showed that I have a underactive thyroid.
My gp felt this had probably caused the absent periods.
My AF however came back in December and I have had a 23 day cycle and a 33 day cycle.

I am now on cd 37 and no sign of af again.
I have been to the doctors again today to check my thyroid again and tsh is now in normal range.

However I explained to the doctor a different one to what I usally see that AF appears to have dissapeared again.

H e mentioned polycystic ovaries and I told him that the other doctor I had been seeing didn't think I had the condition as it would have showed on the hormone test.

He said no only a scan can rule it out.
I now have to go for a scan on the ovaries.

Is this the the only way to really detect polycycstic ovaries I was relieved when my last doctor said there was no sign of the condition and now I am worried that I could have it after all.

My blood test was ok a bit borderline if I remeber rightly, but there was lots of cysts on ultrasound scan, gynae said the scan was needed to diagnose absolutely.

fruitloop79 · 07/03/2008 15:23

nope, my blood tests came back "normal" I've also had an ultrasound scan in the past which didnt pick up PCOS. I've since had an internal scan which did pick it up. Come and see us on the PCOS thread The girls on there are really helpful

What my consultant told me they looked at were scans, bloods and irregular cycles. Any two out of three they will diagnose as PCOS.

Hi Bigfatmom - Scans can only confirm PCOS. When I was diagnosed with PCOS, I too had blood tests and then a scan. The scan confirmed PCOS. Remember to drink plenty of water if you want an abdominal scan, or it won't show a thing!

Good luck xx

Hi bigfatmom. I had a blood tests and scans and neither picked up that one of my ovaries was polycycstic. It was only confirmed when I had a lap and dye to treat endometriosis.

I think every single case is different though and two of my friends who also have PCOS, both were diagnosed through scans.

Good luck

has anyone here had either PCOS or endometriosis without having any pains and cramps?

helenlouisey · 09/03/2008 19:18

yes I've had both PCOS and endometriosis without any pains and cramps. I had no symptoms on endometriosis other than infertility. A few problems with my periods which looking back were probably symptoms of PCOS, resolved with Clomid though.

beaniesteve · 09/03/2008 20:44

What sorts of problems?

helenlouisey · 10/03/2008 20:24

I was having quite a short luteal phase and alot of spotting from about 4 DPO through to my period. I was also ovulating quite late in my cycle. When I had my blood tests done my progesterone was very border line at about 31 is I remember correctly. I was on clomid for 3 months in the run up to a lap and dye and it has really regulated my cycles. I don't have full blown PCOS, one of my ovaries is polycycstic and the other one is completely healthy.

lacarete · 10/03/2008 20:39

I had pcos with no symptoms aside from almost total lack of periods. I was given metformin and was very lucky and conceived pretty quickly.

I had blood tests but docs always said they were inconclusive - or rather for one gp it was enough to diagnose, for another it showed I didn't have pcos. Grr.

But whenever I've had to have a scan for various things the person doing it always says 'do you know you're ovaries are polycystic?' so it must be fairly visible.

lacarete · 10/03/2008 20:39

your ovaries - sorry

My GP did some kind of blood test (can't remember what) and said it ruled out PCOS--WRONG!

I blatantly had it--couldn't lose weight, spotty, hairy, reeealllly long cycles with about half of those being anovulatory.

My next GP took one look at me and said she thought I probably did have it--and ordered me to lose weight (duh, I'm trying!).

I had some lower abdominal pain and another GP thought I might have a fibroid or a cyst. When I finally got sent for a scan, there was no fibroid or current cyst, but my ovaries were enlarged (1.5 & 3 x bigger than normal) and they had the classic PCO 'string of pearls' look. At last, a frickin' diagnosis!

Then when I went for fertility investigations I had a different blood test that showed I wasn't ovulating (which I already knew from temping).

So in conclusion, never let a GP tell you PCOS is ruled out by one blood test, especially when you have all the symptoms!
