DH and i are planning a trip to the Gambia.

We would like to ttc while we are out there. I am unsure as yet of what injections are needed but know that it is quite a few.

would it not be a good idea to ttc bearing in mind i will have had lots of drugs beforehand?

Hello CDTM, when we went on honeymoon in Africa we had to have Yellow Fever Vaccination and were advised not to TTC for at least 6 months - which we ignored, got pregnant and then had a miscarriage. Not sure if they were linked but I think you would probably need to have Malaria protection and the tablets are fairly strong so probably best to seek advice from GP. However newer drugs such as Malarone mean that you only need to take them for a much shorter period nowadays.

ok...thanks for that.

one assumes then, that it would not be a good idea to travel when pg then...

(think will have to reschedule life for next 2 years now)

Hi CDFM, I think it depends where in Africa you are travelling when pregnant. Gambia is one area of Africa I have not been to. I would say yes to S.Africa because the hospital care available is in parts a lot like here however would not risk Tanzania for example because whilst it is so fantastic I would worry if I was unwell there or pregnant. Was a very early miscarriage and now have 2 DC so if I honest it doesn't really enter my head although it was hideous at the time...part of my life thats gone.
