Do I have to wait to have a third miscarriage?

Hi ladies,

I've looked up lots of topics on here before but never posted. I have two children aged 5 and 3, and we are keen to have a third. I have just turned 39 so time is running out. We get pregnant very easily but unfortunately I have miscarried twice in the last year, almost back to back. As you know, there is no follow-up investigation in the UK until you suffer a third miscarriage which seems excessively cruel. I asked my GP for a general blood test which came back normal, I had a smear test which was normal, I lost around a stone just to get back to nearer my pre-pregnancy weight by following a fairly low-carb, low sugar diet and I don't smoke etc.

I phoned my GP today to ask if I could take baby aspirin and be prescribed progesterone to assist as that's what all the research seems to point to, to give a woman the best chance of a pregnancy enduring. He said he could not, and referred me to a private clinic in the local area as I said I could pay for a private consultation or a private prescription. The clinic said that because the pregnancy would be natural, the doctors there would be unlikely to prescribe anything. In short, I cannot get progesterone. I am going to start taking baby aspirin when we are ready, and the GP did not mention any kind of risk, but I feel frustrated that we are left to try again without any assistance even though we have done everything else we can to ensure we are healthy.

Does anyone have any positive experience of getting progesterone on the NHS or privately in a similar situation? Does anyone have a recent positive experience of taking baby aspirin?

Thank you so much x

Sorry for you losses, what stages were you at? I had one MMC in may this year, I am now 5 weeks pregnant and next week I get an early epu scan and progesterone. Guidelines have changed you don't need to wait for 3...just some areas haven't caught up on this yet!! And can be pretty unhelpful!! My GP etc wouldn't give me it either, but luckily I have a very helpful nurse at epu.... After ONE miscarriage if you are "spotting" you have to be offered progesterone. Thiseans even if you had a single spot in your discharge.... It doesn't need to be major spotting. My nurse will add "spotting" to my records next week.... That's how I'll get it. If you Google NICE guidelines on progesterone after miscarriage you will come across the official report.... You can then hand this to your epu and demand it.

Thank you @Kellyaust - I hadn't thought about contacting the EPU...they've always been brilliant. My first was at 7.5 weeks and the second was a MMC at 11.5 weeks...the baby had died shortly after a successful early scan at 8 weeks. Are you also trying baby aspirin? I'm sorry for your first loss, delighted about your news :)

Yes I was supposed to use it from 12 weeks last time due to high risk anyway but I've started using it straight away now. Definitely contact them xx
