Hi everyone,

I have been TTC for nearly a year now and I suffer from PCOS. I’ve seen a fertility specialist through the NHS, who has said I need to be a certain BMI to get treatment and as I already have a child it will be difficult. I wanted to know if anyone has has experience with getting ovulation induction treatments privately, and what the process was and costs. Also, will places like Nuffield Health accept tests done by the GP rather then me doing them all again.

Its so difficult each month checking if I'm ovulating and it’s negative every time, I didn’t have a problem conceiving my first born (I conceived the first month of trying). I understand I’ve conceived before but I have always wanted to have children close in age and for there to be siblings. 😔 Any advice would be very appreciated!! ☺️

thank you!

I don't have any experience really with going through the NHS - I did a few initial tests which confirmed I had PCOS and then my fertility referal was an appointment in two years time which I wasn't going to wait for so I went privately.

When I went privately, I had to redo all the NHS tests (bloods, scans, semen analysis etc) before getting treatment. I think it's likely most private places would insist on doing their own tests but perhaps if your tests were very recent it might be ok. The tests cost privately around £750, but it was very quick to organise, took about 3 weeks from initial consulation to getting a treatment plan ready to go.

I was recommended ovulation induction using letrozole rather than clomid as it is recommended for PCOS, and it cost about £500 a cycle, plus £100 a cycle for medication - the letrozole was about £15 of that but I also needed a shot to induce ovulation and then progesterone supports as well during tww. So in summary, it's not cheap. This was in London, in 2022 so it might be cheaper outside of the city.

I would suggest though if you have a PCOS diagnosis, and what I wish I had done before I spent all that money, is give Infolic Alpha from fertility family a try If you haven't already. It's about £30 a month I think, you just buy it online and it helps to treat the PCOS hormone imbalance. As you already conceived before, and you have regularish cycles it might just give you the boost you need to get over the line with ovulation. They say to try it for 3-6 months to see if it works for you, and given how much cheaper it is than fertility treatment it might be worth it if you have the time.

Hi,
thank you!!

I live in Epsom so its not far from London at all, assuming it’ll be London prices so I guess it would cost that much. I actually took Inositol for around 6 months but that didn’t regulate my periods it only made my PCOS symptoms better. Then my Gp prescribed me Metformin which I had been taking for around 4 months now. The metformin I think has made my cycle regular slightly but the side affects weren’t great so i have actually lowered the dose of that.
What I don’t understand is I dont think i had any symptoms of pcos ever until 7/8 months after having my first born… is it possible to just get it later on?
I think I am just gonna give it until December and then i might see if I can get it done privately!

Like you we saw a fertility specialist. They told us what kind of treatment we would benefit from but because of their criteria we were looking at a long wait to begin treatment (both me and my partner have children from previous relationships)
We found somewhere online in UK and bought clomid and used it following the protocol the specialist said we would be on. I ovulated cycle 1 but didn't conceive. I got pregnant cycle 2 but miscarried due to a fibromyalgia flare up and we took a few months break. We just bought it again and I am now on cycle 1 again waiting to see if I ovulate.
It cost us about £25 a month so that is probably the sort of figure you will be looking at going private. I think you might have extra costs like tests and scans etc. We paid for our own private scan which was £60 so I'd say calculating going private add cost of meds plus scans then maybe add same on again for consultation plus tests and you should be in the right ball park of what it will cost x

@40smum23 Can I ask where you bought clomid?

40smum23 · 29/10/2023 12:13

I'm not sure I should post something like that on a public forum that anyone can just come across and try without doing any research but I can pm you if you want x
