PCOS and TTC support/help?

Hi

would love to hear from anyone else who has PCOS and is TTC

I have been TTC for a while and i recently started testing my BBT, during the last 4 months only one cycle showed i ovulated. Currently day 22 of a cycle and no ovulation yet (cycle vary but never more than 38 days) - i check strips daily if not twice a day but rely on BBT for convo. I also had a day 21 test which was negative.

I have been recently diagnosed with PCOS through a private scan (work insurance so couldn't discuss fertility as not covered). I then went to my GP who referred me to fertility clinic which came quickly however they instantly said they won't see/do anything due to my BMI of 35.

I have lost 20kg through diet and exercise in 18 months and in order to hit my BMI of 30 i have to lose another 15kg which feels like it will take me another 18 months.

Honestly I find this so stressful and feel like time is just passing and so stuck in a rut about what i can do to get moving with some fertility help. I desperately want a baby!

Any one else with PCOS that can offer any help? any positive stories of natural conceiving? words of wisdom?

i've also started taking free soul pcos tablets.

First of all, single scan is not enough for PCOS to be diagnosed. You might just have multifollicular ovaries.

The fact you have regular cycles is very promising.

Have you read Lara Briden's book on menstrual cycle? She has excellent advice for women with PCOS.

I was diagnosed with pcos privately when ttc my first child. I was prescribed metformin and although I was weighed they didn’t comment on it (bmi was around 32). I conceived three cycles after starting taking it, and now I’m pregnant with my second on the first try since starting it again. Pay privately for a fertility appointment and get they’ll likely be able to prescribe it for. It was well worthy the price for me!

I will say it doesn’t work for everyone with pcos, but the consultant said it get really works for 50% of the people they see. Worth a try whilst you are losing weight to go down the nhs route.

I didn't right it above but i also had blood tests done and have so much hair on my face etc which is why the PCOS diagnosis was done.

i've not but will order the book off amazon. thanks for recommending.

my cycles are irregular but between 22-38 days usually. (they've been like this since i was 14 and continuously dismissed) - now 34 .

@Overthebow did your doctor recommend? also once you conceived did you then stop taking it? i will look into this! my doctor doesn't even recommend BBT which is why i went private through insurance to see about PCOS

No I never went to my doctor I went straight to a private fertility clinic for a fertility check. I knew the NHS wouldn’t do anything whilst I weighed more than 30 bmi and there are long waiting times for fertility referrals so didn’t bother. I stopped taking it at around 12 weeks pregnant each time. Cost about £200 for the consultant appointment then £30ish a month for the metformin through private prescription, but was definitely worth it.

@Overthebow this is so helpful! thank you!

Might be a silly question did you just go and see a consultant and tell them you have PCOS and have been TTC? or did you need to take test etc.

Also it wasn't in london by any chance? (Where i'm based so would love to go to a recommended one)

No I didn’t know I had it when I went there so they did tests and a scan and suggested I try metformin to see if it works and it did. If you already know you have it you might be able to shortcut some of that. Unfortunately it wasn’t London so I can’t help with fertility clinics there.

@Optimistic66 Where in London are you? I was diagnosed with pcos on my 20's but told they weren't worried unless I struggled to conceive! Wish I hadn't left it at that. Anyway I'm on Metformin and I think it definitely regulated my cycles in a month or two. I take 1.5g daily but 1g made a difference too. Apart from that I'm take Pregnacare Conception Max. I've heard lots of good things about pcos diets and intermittent fasting so that may be worth a go too
