I'm currently 12stone 4lbs
Do you think my weight could be contributing to me not getting pregnant?
Had all the tests

I had my first at 37 and my second at 40. I have always weighed 12 -12.5 stone.

ChildrenOfRuin · 10/08/2023 17:04

I was about 3 stone heavier than that for both of my post 35 years pregnancies.

But I guess just because my weight didn’t stop me getting pregnant is no guarantee that it wouldn’t be an issue for someone else.

cheeseandketchupsandwich · 10/08/2023 17:05

Had my second in April at age 38 and weigh quite abit more than you

Hoppinggreen · 10/08/2023 17:06

First time at 33 weighing 15 stone
Second time at 37 weighing roughly the same

FortheBeautyoftheEarth · 10/08/2023 17:06

Isn't it more based on your BMI score? Weight on it's own doesn't mean a lot without height. I was slightly over my BMI and I am now 9 weeks pregnant. :-)

M00nknight · 10/08/2023 17:26

Im 5ft 3 .
Thanks, that's taken some of the pressure of me. I was advised at our last fertility consultation in june that I needed to lose weight ( I was 12.8 at the time ) and that It affect me getting pregnant. It's been such a bummer. I don't want to crash diet while trying to get pregnant and but then I was also conscious that "time is ticking on " but I know losing weight will be a slow journey so I guess I just wanted some reassurance that being overweight its still possible . I'm having periods and ovulating every month . DH is perfect weight and tubes are open ect so I've been blaming myself for being a bit overweight as the reason

I’m 38 and just over 13st with a BMI hovering the 29/30 mark. I’m pregnant with my second. Was the same BMI the first time too.

I have The Fertility Diet book and I am certain there’s a study in there that said once a certain percentage of weight is lost, it makes it more likely to conceive.

i just looked it up:

”A 5 to 7 percent decrease in body weight, or about 10 to 20 pounds, by an obese woman will increase her chances of getting pregnant.”

AskAgathaIfSheWantsACupOfTea · 10/08/2023 17:42

Anecdotally, I’ve been pregnant 3 times. All 3 times were when shortly after ovulation I was just by coincidence doing a lot more exercise than usual (just walking on holiday).

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 10/08/2023 17:44

I weighed a lot more than you when I got pregnant at 37 and again at 39

This holds true for me. I was ttc for 18 months and conceived after losing 10% of my body weight.

bookish83 · 10/08/2023 17:58

I lost about 7lb and got pregnant after that. Wasn't 5% but I do believe that month of being healthier helped.

I know of people a lot heavier than you who get pregnant. I also was heavier than your current weight

faban · 10/08/2023 18:02

Not me but my mum is very overweight and conceived my surprise brother at 39... when I was 18 and 2 kids in between xx

ttcat37 · 10/08/2023 22:02

I’m 37 and currently 13 weeks pregnant. My bmi when I became pregnant was 33. It took us nearly a year.

Same here. Im 37, have PCOS and BMI was around 28 when we had fertility treatment to conceive DD1 in 2020. Recently i lost 10% of my body weight and whilst waiting for the fertility clinic tests again to try for DC2 and found out i was pregnant naturally for the first time ever in 5years of ttc.

Olika · 10/08/2023 22:22

I got pregnant after loosing some weight. It doesn't have to slow down the journey. You just eat healthier and exercise. Smile

Jennifer89 · 13/08/2023 23:54

Isn't being overweight over BMI 30 more of a concern? A little overweight shouldn't be an issue

Runnerinthenight · 13/08/2023 23:58

I was overweight going into all my pregnancies. Ended up lighter each time after giving birth but unfortunately stacked it all back on again 🙄

Finally lost weight in late 50s, not really sure why!! Wasn't trying!

Nat6999 · 14/08/2023 00:13

I did, I was 15 stone & 37 when I got pregnant with ds. It took me 18 months & 2 losses to have him.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 14/08/2023 20:57

I was JUST over weight when I fell pregnant first tiem I tried. Are you stressed? Could stress be making you over weight because you are eating badly and also impacting firtility?

JustTrying1 · 15/08/2023 20:10

I'm 36 and over the BMI of 30 threshold. I'm actually gutted because although I knew I was overweight I didn't realise i had such a high BMI. I've TTC before and got referred to IVF and I was much thinner then (didn't proceed with IVF due to relationship breakdown). NHS requires less than 30 BMI so although I'm gutted that we likely won't qualify due to my weight, I am still determined to do what I can and get some weight off - whether it will be enough to get referred, I don't know. Either way the doctor has already started the blood tests so we will see.

Newmum110 · 15/08/2023 20:23

Overweight & had no issues getting pregnant. Probably different for everyone, I'm quite active just like my food too much.

Newmum110 · 15/08/2023 20:24

Forgot to say late 30s

thejadefish · 15/08/2023 20:26

I had a BMI of 30 & fell pregnant at 44 - we'd been trying for a few years & I had just lost about half a stone when I fell pregnant. I have no idea if that helped of course! If I understand Google results correctly (& its entirely possible that I don't) the problem with being overweight when ttc is that the excess weight can affect your hormone levels (oestrogen?) which in turn can affect ovulation. If you're ovulating regularly you probably don't have a problem (it doesn't necessarily effect everyone of course and I guess it also depends on overweight by how much). Plenty have conceived despite being overweight so try not to worry and good luck

I was in your position too. My doctor was happy for me to be referred and have the bloods, scans etc done and the consultant appt was booked for 3 months time. In those 3 months, i did Fast 800, lost 12kg in 12weeks and got my BMI from 32 to 28. So i absolutely understand how disheartening it is but you can do this! 💪 And its a motivator like ive never had before!

Amazingly, as i mentioned above, i found out i was pregnant naturally after my consultant appt and im convinced it was the weight loss that did it as its the first natural conception in 4yrs of trying (DD1 was via letrozole) even when i was much thinner when we started trying (BMI probably around 24?)

I'm BMI of 38 so I worked out I've got about 4 stone to lose. Tbh I had planned to when we decided we wanted to start trying but I didn't expect the doctor to come at us so quick with the tests (I believe that's because I was referred back in 2016). I can't remember how much I weighed back then but knowing how much weight I've put on I'm going to guess I was around or just below 30BMI.

We've already said if we can't conceive naturally or IVF won't happen (or doesn't work) then we are going to adopt 😊
