What to do if pregnant just before holiday

If I were lucky enough to find out I was pregnant just before we go on holiday, about five days before we go, what would I need to do doctors/appointment-wise before I go? Never been pregnant before so not sure what the steps are after getting a positive test. Thanks! Flowers

In our area you self refer to midwife, but can’t do so before 7 weeks iirc.
Google your area and see what the procedure is where you are. Good luck!

Nothing happens during the first weeks until you have your 1st app with a midwife to register your pregnancy and all details. Nhs says this should happen before you are 10 weeks pregnant. If you find out you are, call your GP practise so they can book you in already.

Olika · 09/08/2023 23:09

Yes you might have to self refer. Where I live I called my GP as they have pregnancy clinic at theirs.

bookworm100 · 09/08/2023 23:10

Ah thanks all! So you don't have to get a blood test? I feel like I see people saying they get a blood test after a positive urine test?

Booking in bloods are later, it’s generally before 10 weeks but not straight after a positive HPT.

bookworm100 · 09/08/2023 23:17

Ah ok, so to confirm your pregnancy with a blood test at the doctors isn't standard practice? Seems like lots of people do that, but good if it's one less thing I have to do in a mad rush!

No, there is no other test to prove you are pregnant at the gp/midwife. You are just in limbo until your booking in appointment

PinkDaffodil2 · 09/08/2023 23:22

In the UK you don’t do anything until the first midwife appointment about 8 weeks after the first day of your last period.
If you google ‘booking appointment’ and your area / local hospital it should be clear if you self refer (lots have online forms) or in some areas your GP refers you. No blood tests needed to confirm.
Important things for now are to take vit D, folic acid, check the NHS list of foods to avoid.
If you take regular medication for anything, or have thyroid disease, diabetes, high BP etc it’s maybe worth speaking with your GP earlier.

Thank you so much, this is so helpful!

Sorry if this puts a downer on excitement but... just make sure your travel insurance covers pregnancy and pregnancy related issues, just in case...

IME it's covered as standard as long as you don't have any additional/complicating conditions and are less than 28 weeks (or have doctor's clearance thereafter), but it's worth checking.

Ponderingwindow · 10/08/2023 00:03

I remember sitting in my doctors office almost 30 years ago and they had a sign up saying that they do not need to do a confirmation test for pregnancy. Home tests were perfectly accurate even then. Plus by the time you see your care provider, there are other signs of pregnancy.

I had a chronic health condition so I knew the second I got a positive I had to call my doctors, but that is rare.

depending on where you are traveling, I would review pregnancy specific diseases like Zika and figure out if you need to make any modifications.

bookworm100 · 10/08/2023 00:14

Thank you that is so helpful! I'll check my travel is insurance. Not pregnant yet like I said! But could happen so want to be prepared to know what I need to do if I find out just before I go

Happened to me. You don’t need to do anything at all. Be aware that there are some. things you are advised not to do in early pregnancy - for example go in hot tubs or get massages (even places that do pregnancy massage won’t do it in the early stages)

AuntMarch · 10/08/2023 00:21

I found out just after my holiday, at least you wouldn't end up hitting the all inclusive hard like I did 😳 (no harm done thankfully!)

Mrburnshound · 10/08/2023 00:26

Yes yes to extra insurance.
I had a chemical pregnancy so was 5 weeks then had a miscarriage which i was part way through when i flew to the US. I wasnt really sad about the miscarriage but was hoping for no complications that might require a dr as even with complete coverage, i am scared of going to the dr jn the US!

bookworm100 · 10/08/2023 01:07

Thanks @Mrburnshound - eek, I'm going to the US! Where do you find extra insurance? What do you search for? Pregnancy insurance? Thank you!

You might not need extra! I went to NewYork when I was 29 weeks. All fine on standard insurance as long as I had the doctor's first to fly letter. Just start by having a chat with your current insurance provider.
