Implant stuck in arm and trying to get pregnant

I am so annoyed! I’ve had an implant stuck in my arm for 4 years now. I went to get it removed 2 years ago and it has migrated. I was referred to a plastic surgeon (nhs) and told it would be 12 weeks max. I didn’t hear anything so chased it up last week to be told it will be 36 weeks!!
my husband and I are trying for a baby but I’ve read clinical trials online that basically say it lasts 7years +
has anyone been in the same situation and fallen pregnant whilst Nexplanon was still in their arm?
TY x

No, but the delay sounds awful. Sorry you are going through this.

i Take it you can’t feel it? I would be digging around for the little fucker. I pulled my own coil out, though, and would get some ideas about an implant too, in your position. Sensibly though, how old are you and can you afford to go private for advice?

vipersnest1 · 18/07/2023 21:18

Contact the consultant's secretary and tell them what you've said here. You're not asking for much.
Alternatively, do you have any local GUM clinics who will do it? Dd1's implant had broken in two, and ended up with a nasty wound, but it healed fine, so you might need to be prepared for that.

Is there anywhere else you can go for someone to try to get it out? My local sexual health clinic gets them out so I might try there if I’d been to the GP previously. Just to see if someone else can do it.

I had one years ago that migrated, I had it dug out with an ultrasound, a local and some forceps, by a consultant at my local sexual health clinic, I was referred by my GP and didn't have to wait long.

Why would need a plastic surgeon? Where do they think it's gone?

Ruby89uk · 18/07/2023 21:20

it is deep in my arm, already had a scan which shows it’s next to the nerve and wrapped in tissue.. no danger I will be digging around for it.
Private is extortionate, £150 consultation, £350 scan then the cost of the surgery which will be in the thousands as it has to be under general anaesthetic.

As a dr I'd expedite your referral if you told me you'd get it out yourself on a recorded phone line..
just saying

It’s next to my nerves and wrapped in tissue so they need a plastic surgeon to do it so I don’t lose the use of my arm! Such a mess!

Would they move you up the waiting list if you said you were getting pins and needles or shooting pains down your arm?
<note: maybe research which nerve its near and what it does first before you fabricate any extra symptoms>

SmartiesParty · 18/07/2023 21:43

I can't help with the removal but I got pregnant 2 years 10 months into my last implant

This is horrendous, I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Of course you can’t do diy I’m sorry I suggested it! I agree with others though, making a real fuss likely to be the only way to expedite this. You can write various letters/emails/make calls, you shouldn’t have to put your fertility on hold for this. Good luck.

Like@WestOfWestminster I would say fib about increased pain or pins and needles. Also if they've done an ultrasound and know where it is could you get a copy of the ultrasound and send it to a private consultant rather than having another ultrasound? I know it's still pricey but at least it may cut out the cost of doing another ultrasound
