Is there a difference between slow and immediate release with regards to effectiveness? Is there any particular reason why extended isn't recommended?

I have been on immediate release metformin for the past year but find it hard to tolerate. 💩. Enough said .
I spoke to my gynaecologist about switching me to extended release.
He hummed about for a moment debating with himself and said he's not a fan of the the extended release. He didn't go into more detail. He questioned weather I should stop metformin all together but said metfomin and clomid do work better together so I said I'd like to try extended so he said OK I can try it and wrote me a new prescription.

Basically, anyone any idea why he wouldn't be a fan of extended release? Has anyone been on both? Is there any difference with regards to effectiveness or something?

Hi! I also take metformin 2000mg a day
i get what you mean about the 💩 🙈
but I find if I stay away from greasy foods and cheese it’s not quite as bad, I’ve just learnt to deal with it and keep telling myself it’s a means to an end in terms of giving myself the best chance to get pregnant. But after 3 years of ttc im feeling a little desperate so maybe that’s why I’ll put up with the 💩 issues 😂

i did read about the extended release version and although is easier on the stomach it did say it isn’t as effective as the normal version. Not sure why or how that would be the case though! Definitely worth doing some research … but surely as long as you’re getting the metformin in your system, slow release or not it would still have some benefits?

@Crazyhope ah that's interesting. I came across an article last night that actually suggested slow release was more effective.
I was prescribed 1500mg last year
Yet my new fertility consultant thought that was too high of a dose to begin with and suggested I take 750mg .. everything I've read online suggests 1500mg is standard . I can only tolerate 500mg to 1000mg daily so im assuming that's why he's lowered me but at the same thing I often think maybe the reason why its not working for me is because I'm not taking a high enough dose
