Ovulating but still bleeding after MMC - is it safe to TTC?

Hello there. I had a missed miscarriage on May 4th, at nine weeks (six weeks growth) and passed the baby on May 6th. I'm still bleeding a little - little clots when I wake though nothing heavy. But I've just tested and am ovulating today (solid smiley on Clear Blue OPK). I'm really confused as to what to do. It is painful to miss this chance to try again but I'm scared of another miscarriage. Most threads I've seen where people got pregnant quickly after a miscarriage, their bleeding had stopped. Thank you in advance for any advice - obviously I have to decide whether to DTD today. X

Hi @Monkeyportrait so sorry for your loss. I had a MMC on 16th April and as far as I know, not ovulated again yet, so slightly jealous! That said, everything I've heard is that you ought to wait to have sex until all bleeding has passed as there is a chance of infection if you are still bleeding. Also, I would guess if you're still bleeding that you've not had a negative pregnancy test yet? So that would confuse things further. Painful as it is... (And I know as I'm also so eager to jump back on the bandwagon) I think I would wait until next cycle. The great thing is that if you know youve ovulated, you know when to expect a period and hopefully then it will be plain sailing for next cycle.

Sending big hugs and hope you're doing ok. 💕

Thank you so much for your advice - I just checked by doing a pregnancy test and it is completely negative, not even the faintest line - so even more confused 😕. Maybe my womb lining would not be strong enough even if it happened now?? It took us a whole year with the one I just lost - I'm so sorry for your loss too and I'm sure you will ovulate soon. X

I was told before trying to conceive wait until you have a negative pregnancy test and have stopped bleeding, i was advised to wait for one period before trying. However they also said they have had women who have conceived earlier than this and had great outcomes.

The problem is if you ttc then 2 weeks later do a +ve test is it retained tissue or a new pregnancy? My friend had to have an MVA for retained tissue 8 weeks after her MC. It just puts you through a lot of stress of potentially false hope that you could avoid by waiting. Plus if you don't have a period you might not know when you ovulated (even when testing) and go for scan at 7 weeks but baby is only 5 weeks and you might think you are miscsrrying again but actually it's just a bit behind.

If it was me I'd probably base it on how old I was, so if I was in my 20s with plenty of cycles to go then I'd wait but if I was in my 40s I might make a different decision.

So sorry you have joined this crappy club ❤

Thank you - really helpful as they never tell yo in this stuff in the hospital. I'm 42, that's the issue really 😔. Its so hard to wait. But I know exactly what you mean about the danger of false hopes.

@Monkeyportrait it really is so hard. If your test is super faint and you still have a bit of bleeding, the good thing is that it looks like you won't have retained products and your body is dealing with the loss as best it can. I had a very faint test after 2 weeks and my complete negative after 3 (it might have come earlier but I didn't want to test too often and was away that last week too so decided to wait until I got home).

Hopefully you will get your negative in the next few days, and hopefully your periodsokn after that and then you can go for it next cycle knowing exactly where things stand. X
