TSH above 2.5 when TTC

Had my TSH tested online and it came back at 2.88 which was reported as normal but I've seen online that 2.5 should be the max if TTC.

Does anyone have any stories of a elevated TSH but managing to get pregnant? Do the NHS do anything about it? Is there anything to do to reduce it?

I think 2.88 is defined as sub clinical, so you wouldn't get Levothyroxine. How long have you been TTC? Have you got regular cycles? See how things go over the next few months...

I believe ideally they should be no more than 2.5 yes. However I fell pregnant with my son after a few months of 'very casually' trying in 2020 and found out at 5 weeks pregnant I had elevated TSH levels although not sure exactly what number. On my last blood test in December my TSH was 7, conceived again in January first cycle trying but ended in a chemical, then 2 months later conceived again although ended in miscarriage at 6 weeks. So even with a TSH of 7 I don't seem to have a problem conceiving. I have been prescribed Levothyroxine now though due to the pregnancy losses as higher TSH increases risk of miscarriage although I think the risk is higher if TSH is above 4.5.

@WhiteHorse92 Thanks for replying. That's comforting to know. Seems to be a mixed bag. I do have some symptoms that might be linked to thryroid. I've got another blood test in a few weeks and I'll go from there.

Hey @Un7breakable I have been scouring for info on this as has a recent blood test as struggling to conceive and my mum had low thyroid function. My TSH is 3.8 so “within range”. I rang our private GP via work but they were pretty dismissive so I am going to try following up with NHS GP to see if they think a course of medication is sensible.

It doesn’t seem my first pregnancy bloods were saved to my GP results so I can’t see what I was the first time round.

I’ve gone down a horrible google rabbit hole now and convinced it’s far too high. I think it’s definitely worth trying to speak to the GP again about your concerns. I am a confident person but I find it so hard to advocate for myself in medical scenarios as I don’t want to be that annoying person who thinks they know better thanks to Dr Google but I think with this I am going to have to try and push harder for an answer.

One thing I’m not clear on is if you go onto Levothyroxine if it’s then for life as my doctor friend said your thyroid can then get “lazy”.

Sorry to hear your in a similar position and the Dr was dismissive. It seems a lot of fertility clinics are have to prescribe. I don't know if you have to stay on for life either, but if it's that or no baby I know which I'd choose.
