I can't feel my coil strings

Sorry if this is the wrong category.
I have had the mirena coil fitted for about 9 months now, I last checked for the strings about 6 months ago and could feel them. I have just tried again but can't anymore. I have looked up online and have read that it may have fallen out or punctured the uterus, however, I have not had any symptoms. I have been really bloated lately but put that down to side effects of the coil (and eating more).
Thank you for any help!

My coil came out during a heavy period (at least that’s what I concluded as I had a scan and it’s not there) and I fell PG with a very unwanted pregnancy. I would do a test and if it’s negative then ask for a scan to check it hasn’t migrated.

You can't necessarily get pregnant if the strings have been sucked in but if it has come out then yes.

Test and check is way to go

It is possible tho, my friend got pregnant with the coil perfectly in place 😅

The strings can curl up. It happened to me. The dr uses a tool to scoop them back down. Its still effective.

However, do a test because you do look a tad pregnant 🙈 I didnt have any bloat like that with coil.

MumofSpud · 21/04/2023 19:35

I have had coils for years and gave never wanted to investigate if I could feel them!
Once DH felt them whilst DTD so I went back and got them shortened

Ttcmumma · 21/04/2023 20:44

@MumofSpud you are advised to check monthly for your own safety, they can actually cause alot of harm if they move too much and also risk of pregnancy if they come out

My threads vanished for a while and I always intended to go get it checked out, but since it was still reducing my periods to almost nothing I figured it was still there and didn't hurry. As it happens, they eventually returned from their adventure up inside my cervix.
It would still be as effective as usual as birth control if the strings have gone up, as long as it hasn't gone through the uterus wall. A scan will check to see it is still in the right place (which I should have had but didn't get round to).
If it fell out during a heavy bleed then that is rather different.

OP are you feeling movements?

greenwaterbottle12 · 21/04/2023 21:51

To be fair I can get this bloated with food intolerances and my gastroparesis but I def think you need to take a pregnancy test to rule that out asap

PickledScrump · 21/04/2023 23:25

Your bloating is very low down. I bloated a lot with the mirena but mine was stomach bloating, higher up. Yours seems lower more in the uterus area. Also definitely not normal to be leaking anything from your nipples unless pregnant. Get a test done asap and if it’s negative get on with your dr on Monday

I think this is a little harsh. Clearly the op has at least one baby and life does get busy so her health or wellbeing is probably the last thing on her mind. It happens more than you think where women don’t realise they’re pregnant, especially when they think they’re on birth control so any weight gain wouldn’t necessarily scream pregnant.

I agree with everything else you said though, wandering coils can be dangerous so definitely the op needs to get checked out asap and take a pregnancy test.

I have two young toddlers, and am just crazy busy with work and life... there is no need for such a harsh message.
For all of those that messaged, thank you. My pregnancy test came back negative. I will go to the gp to check the coil, and will go to rhe doctors regarding my pregnant looking belly!! Glad that I checked with a pregnancy test though :)

@Travelisfun @Goblet93 exactly, you have 2 young children that need their mum and you have ignored two massive warning signs in the unexplained bloating and milk production from the nipples. Any changes in breasts should be alarm bells on steroids, and bloating can be a big sign of something nefarious. You cannot afford to neglect your health like this FOR those young children. You may find it harsh but its true. Both of these should have been an urgent medical trip even without the potentially migratory coil, which is also dangerous.

You may go to GP and find you are pregnant and so far on that the HCG is so high you've got hook effect and coil fell out. Awesome, best case scenario. But what if there is a medical problem that urgently needs addressing and it's gotten worse while you've been ignoring all the warning signs?

Goblet93 · 23/04/2023 08:37

@Travelisfun hope that the gp goes well, the important thing is that you’re going x

@ConfessionsOfAMumDramaQueen it hasn’t really been ignored, the op came on here for advice and is going to the gp. Leave it now, I’m not sure what you have to gain from continuing, your messages aren’t helpful.

I've had a Mirena for 11 years and in that time experienced one going walkabout higher into my uterus (which had to be removed with a camera) and another which was spontaneously expelled and landed in the loo! So either are possible; only way to find out which is to see your doctor.

I also hope it goes well, I wish the OP gets the best outcome possible! I hope the GP does an exam, finds a happy and healthy baby in there OP is thrilled with, no coil complications and this baby completes their family and all live happily ever after. All OPs symptoms are because of that.

However I have seen so much competitive 'super-mummy' martyrdom where they do so so much for everyone else they don't exist. They're so busy they don't eat, sleep and apparently notice discharge from their nipples and shrug it off because god forbid they take a few minutes to call the GP and make sure they're healthy to be around for their children for years to come. Do you know how many women with young children are seen in hospitals faced with life threatening situations and they sit there saying how they kept meaning to come in but just 'didn't have the time'? This culture needs to stop. If one of OPs children is a girl, and in the future her daughter noticed the same symptoms she would want her seen asap. Mums need to think of themselves that way.
