Leaking breasts after miscarriage

Hey all, hoping someone can help with some advise.

On the 10th January I went for my 12 week scan. Should of been 13 weeks 2 days unfortunately baby had passed away at 10 weeks 6 days. I then went on to naturally miscarry 2 days later with some assistance of medicine on the 3rd day. Miscarriage confirmed complete and all back to normal on 3rd February. Had my usual cycles since. Trying to concieve again currently.

Today, almost 3 months after the miscarriage I have woken up to quite swollen areola bumps.. sorry I don't know what they are actually called but those small bumps on your areola. Out of interest I tried to gently squeeze a couple and to my surprise a little bit of milk came out of them! Mostly my left breast.

I'm currently only 6dpo so I'm assuming it would have nothing to do with a new pregnancy but I also had my blood work taken last month which confirmed all my hormones were fine post miscarriage. Blood work was taken for fast unusual weight gain.

Has anyone ever experienced milk from the ducts as long as 3 weeks post miscarriage or do I need to be checked for potentially a completely different issue?

Hello, I'm so sorry for your loss. I apologise I don't have any advice on the leakage but just wanted to say how sorry I am for you. I had a miscarriage at 12 weeks on the 6th January, 2 days before the 12 week scan so feel for you completely. I didn't have any leaking though and I'm not sure if you would have been producing milk so early but that might just be my own ignorance! I would definitely get booked in with the GP to check it out if you can, I am sure they will be able to put your mind at ease xx

I had a miscarriage at 14 weeks, delivered at 15 weeks.

I was anxious I would produce milk but the consultant said it wasn't possible as the pregnancy wasn't far enough along.
If you have breast changes please see you GP.

Have you had a previous full term pregnancy? Have you breastfed in the past?
If not I would seek some urgent advice.

I have a 4 year old (will be 5 in June) but I only breastfed him for a month so I haven't breastfed since July/August of 2018! A few of the ducts/bumps look randomly swollen and definitely some kind of substance coming out but not had any of that since mid-late 2018.

Thank you ♥️ I'm so so sorry for your loss too! I had stupidly already told my 4 year old he was going to be a big brother too. (After a very healthy happy private scan at 10 weeks 5 days) and so breaking the news to him was probably the hardest thing I've ever had to do.
It's horrible isn't it? I hope you are mentally feeling a little stronger than you were in January as I know how hard miscarriage is ♥️ I think I'll contact the gp!

I'm so sorry for your loss 😔. Oh thank you for the information. I did think it would be way too early but as I've had a full term pregnancy in the past I thought maybe it could be possible? It was 2018 though so I really wouldnt expect my breasts to be so eager to start producing milk again and especially after 3 months since loosing the baby... I think I'll contact the gp!

So sorry for your loss.
I'm no medic, but my experience (similar) turned out to be an infection which caused my nipples to leak a milky-looking substance. I was otherwise healthy and had no tenderness or inflammation etc so worth checking in with a medical professional!

BeautifulBirds · 06/04/2023 21:29

Hi OP,
Just to answer...my last full term pregnancy was in 2019, and I EBF for 12 months.
Please see the GP. Any changes need to be investigated ASAP. X

Thank you! I thought because I had no pain or redness it would be unlikely to be an infection. Honestly I didn't even realise we could randomly get infections in our breasts/nipples when not breastfeeding! But would make sense, it's been a year of infections for me. Since the miscarriage it's been 3 Utis, inner and middle ear infection and now potentially this 🤦🏼‍♀️. I think I they might need to give me the biggest dose of antibiotics they can at this rate!!

Infection would however be much better than some of the terrifying things Google say it could be

I agree - google is not our friend with things like this. They did send me to the breast clinic to be sure - can't fault their thoroughness but was scary to be sent regardless. Ended up being 'periductal mastitis' which is a non-lactating form of mastitis (very common among smokers; but I have never smoked). Cleared up with antibiotics and an ultrasound to be sure!
