38 and TTC for 6 months

I’m 38, soon to be 39, and my husband and I have been TTC for 6 months now, 7 cycles to be exact. I’ve been tracking LH and I’ve had what appear to be 3 CPs in that time. So since it doesn’t seem to be happening for us and with my ever advancing age I went to the doctors today to discuss next steps. She basically told me to lose weight, my BMI is just over 40, and come back in 6 months. She did offer me a blood test to test for over active thyroid but that was it. She also said that unless my BMI was under 35 she wouldn’t refer me for further fertility investigations.

Has anybody else in a similar situation had a more positive experience?

I don't think there's anything to suggest that you won't get there. If you've had 3 CPs in six months then you're far from infertile. They might have been caused by low egg quality from reproductive ageing, but it's far more likely that your egg quality is being damaged by your obesity. Obesity can also cause problems with implantation.

If you are serious about having a baby and don't know where to start with weight loss then I would go back to the GP and ask to be referred to a nutritionist. But the GP is being reasonable. You probably don't need fertility treatment but; even if you do, you won't be able to have it until you've lost quite a lot of weight.

I'd go back to the gp and ask for a referral to a fertility consultant. The recommended time for over 35 for trying is 6 months. As for the chemical pregnancy, I'm sorry to hear you've experienced those. I had two in 6 months and referred myself privately. Turned out I needed progesterone suppositories to sustain a pregnancy. I worked on diet, lifestyle factors but had a slightly short luteal phase (10 days) which never improved. I'd push more if it's something you really want to pursue and don't be afraid to advocate for yourself. Make sure you're tracking, take data with you and make sure you're informed. Good luck!

To add to my post it took me 18 months with two CP and a MMC so even though things are happening, doesn't always hurt to get some assistance
