Folic acid and vitamin D

Hi.

We are ttc again after several miscarriages. In the last month, following my last miscarriage, I've been taking almost daily 5mg of folic acid and 5mg of Vitamine D. I have a prescription for when I get pregnant, but I just can't remember the recommended dose for before. In the last 2 days I stopped the folic acid because I finished it and my order gets here tomorrow.

Now, after I read a bit more, I'm a bit stressed I've might been overdosing... I'm guessing I should be around ovulation now. Not sure if I should stop/reduce the doses. Also, could the fact I missed 2 days of folic acid affect conception? Anyone familiar with the topic?

Thank you so much!

Did you find that 5 mg of folic acid increased your cycle length

Hi there,

I personally don't recommend high doses of single vitamins, things can be put out of balance (I'm a fertility nutritionist). I also controversially don't recommend folic acid, because folate is far superior and is natural (folic acid is synthetic). Generally, I recommend Biocare's Pregnancy Multi and you shouldn't need more folate than the amount in there; however, some people will need more B12 (methylcobalamin please not cyano). B12 and folate work together and B12 deficiency is common, folate not so much. It's hard to recommend generically, but if risk factors for the miscarriage can be worked out then a more personalised plan of what is going to make the difference for you as an individual can be established.

Biocare also do a fantastic Nutrisorb Vit D which is a great addition to a preconception plan.

If you look at any bloods you have had done and see if you're B12 levels are low, normal or elevated and your MCHC/MCH markers on your red blood cells you will get an indication of B12/folate issues. A normal serum B12 level does not mean there isn't a deficiency. Do you get mouth ulcers, pins/ned=eldes/numbness/energy problems/digestive issues?

WIshing you positivity on your fertility journey and I'm sorry for all you have been through. Amazing things can come out of adversity so fingers crossed x

@worldwidetravel2017 No effects on cycle length. I have been taking it ever since and I'm now 24w +. So fingers crossed.
Best wishes!
