Cabergoline is a prescription only drug, for treatment of Parkinson's disease or used in the treatment of high prolactin levels. I have been prescribed it to treat my prolactinoma.

It is not a conception aid, but if used to treat high prolactin levels it can then have the effect of returning prolactin to a normal level, making periods return to normal and then conditions for conception are more optimal. My consultant did warn me that my fertility would return and to be careful!

Has your doctor prescribed it for you?

I can see from Google that it is used for fertility purposes, didn't know that! I was given it to fry up my milk supply after breast surgery (it did so within 48hrs, just 2 tablets), so I thought it must have some impact on your hormones or something. Sorry I don't have any relevant experience for you.

Hi, yea my prolactin levels have been over 2000 for the past 18 months so they've now prescribed me cabergoline to help my levels go down so hopefully I can't conceive.. just wondering how long it will take for my cycles to return to normal etc thank you!

@dol89 my level was 1400, started cabergoline and at my next blood test which was 6 weeks later my levels were in normal range. It works very quickly.

Hello I was prescribed cabergoline (very low dose) when ttc my 1st. I didn't have any breast milk leaking but when it took longer than a year to conceiving they checked my hormones and prolactin was slightly elevated. I think it was 800 or around that. Had MRI back then and there was no tumour detected. I took cabergoline for 3 months and got pregnant on my 15/16th cycle.

I am now trying for second and again as it took longer than a year they put me back on but this time it was only very slightly which was like 560. I've been on it for 6 months now and it has come down to normal range but haven't conceived yet. They told me to carry on taking it for a year and to consult them if I conceive.

I hope that helps.

Oh that's very helpful thank you! I'm starting on it this week just waiting for bloods to come back as they checked my prolacting levels again on Tuesday!

Hi, I started taking it due to fertility issues and wanting to conceive. I was prescribed it for high prolactin and it took several months to reduce the level - I think about 6 months - so if it doesn't happen quickly for you, maybe ask to repeat tests and discuss altering the dose. It made me feel absolutely terrible for about three months when I firsts stared taking it, which was a bit scary as I knew I'd have to take it for the rest of my life, but I'm glad I persevered. At about 5 months of taking it, an endocrinologist wrote me a letter saying I'd not had a period for a year therefore I was in menopause and should start taking HRT. Without even seeing him. But then the levels got back to normal and regular periods returned so... I have my first face-to-face appointment with him soon so I'll be interested to hear what he has to say for himself now.
I'm not pregnant and am pretty old now so not sure it will ever happen. But theoretically it could.
