Being prescribed progesterone

Hi all,

I have recently had two back to back chemical miscarriages which has really taken its toll on me. I hear this is common but I really didn't expect having one after another in the space of 6 weeks of each other. After doing lots of googling I'm pretty sure I have low progesterone. My menstrual cycle is fairly light and can last 3 days. I've requested for my bloods to be taken from my GP and waiting to hear from them.
I know lots of other people go through losses too and have seen people say the NHS won't investigate until you have 3-4 miscarriages. I wondered what other peoples experience was and also if going private would be beneficial given how long wait lists are for the NHS. Has anyone else gone private and what was the approximate costing of this?

Thanks all x

I had 2 back to back chemicals and spot 3-4 days before AF but I had my progesterone tested (twice and both really good levels). I had the progesterone tests before and after my first chemical because of the spotting. I got pregnant again the cycle after these and am now 14+2 weeks. The GP wouldn’t prescribe me progesterone as hadn’t had 3 miscarriages and my levels were good when tested but last week I had a bit of brown blood in discharge so the EPU prescribed progesterone until 16 weeks as a precaution but didn’t think progesterone was the issue because it was past 12 weeks but it’s the guidelines if there’s any kind of bleed however small after you’ve previously had a miscarriage

I would go private if I was you as the nhs have a massively long waiting list even if they do refer you before 3 miscarriages. You should be able to get them to do progesterone testing at 6/7dpo though as that’s easy for them to do

Thanks so much for this, it's really helpful and massive congratulations on your pregnancy!

How long did it take for you to get progesterone testing done via your GP? I have an appointment tomorrow but that's just to chat so I'm going to suggest it.

Would private clinics test from 6-7dpo even if you don't have a positive pregnancy test? Both times I didn't get a positive until around 13 dpo. Sounds expensive doing that each time but I really want our rainbow now xx

They test progesterone at around 6/7dpo whether you’re pregnant or not that cycle as that’s how they test if your progesterone is high enough. Even if you had implanted that early (which isn’t common) your progesterone wouldn’t have risen massively because of being pregnant yet. They don’t do it every cycle they only tend to do it once. They only did it twice for me as I went on and on after my first loss.

I don’t know about private as I didn’t go private. I only had the blood tests at my GP. At the initial chat I told them my concerns about my pre AF spotting so they agreed to full blood tests including progesterone and all come back normal. I then found out I was pregnant but was an early loss so I asked them for another progesterone test as I was so sure I had a progesterone issue and it came back really good again so they wouldn’t do anything further unless I had 3 miscarriages. I then had another loss but got told to keep trying and get my partners sperm tested and see if I another miscarriage

if you go private they won’t make you wait for 3 miscarriages and I imagine they will prescribe you progesterone if you want it after 2 losses as it doesn’t harm the baby

Ahhh i see! Completely new to all this so still getting my head around it all. I thought testing every dpo was excessive!

My GP surgery has a gynaecology specialist which is great so I'm hoping tomorrow will go well. I've heard stories of GP's being reluctant to even do blood tests before 3 miscarriages.

How have you found your third pregnancy? It really gives me hope to hear someone who's been in a similar position!

Mine did it because of the spotting before AF I’m not sure if they would have otherwise.

I’m worried all of the time so can’t say I’m enjoying it at the moment but everything was good at my scan. I didn’t have any spotting before this BFP (I tested at 14dpo day after AF due) so knew I was pregnant again before I tested. I’ll never know why I had those early losses just have to put it down to one of those sad things

I hope they agree to the blood tests for you. I know how you feel and it’s horrible 💕
