Hi all

I'm considering having some basic testing done as I've hit the 6 month mark of ttc at 36 with no pregnancy

Please can someone advise me on what blood tests etc I need to ask for and on what days of my cycle I'll need to do them on?

Tia xx

Hi, in my experience I didn't ask for any particular test, they just sent me for day 3 and 21 bloods and husband for a semen analysis. I also had to make sure I had an up to date smear and they did a chlamydia test at the same time

And are those blood tests looking for ovarian reserve/health?

I went to the GP age 37 after trying for 7 months and we got as far as a scan for me (check for any obvious issues), blood tests to check for ovulation and my GP was quite clear that my partner would need his sperm testing before any invasive tests started on me - after all easier to rule out a problem with him first.

You only need to tell your gp how long you've been trying unsuccessfully and they will arrange the next steps.
In my experience,my gp just did routine bloods and sent me for a scan ( which I was diagnosed with pcos) I was then referred to see a gynae. Gps often don't undertake fertility problems as they don't have the expertise.
The gynae organised all the relevant blood tests, further scans, semen analysis for him ect they will try to diagnose any fertility issue. Dependent on that is where you will go next with regards to appropriate treatment

It's quite a long process and long waiting times between appointments. I reported my fertility struggles to my gp in summer 2019

Are you in the UK OP? I'd see your GP now, and say its been over 6mth TTC already. I saw my GP, but as I was 1 week earlier than the 6mth mark- nothing was done! I was told to relax and it would happen! My UK GP finally did a day 21 blood test. The nurse called to say it was normal- and absolutely nothing else done or suggested! I had to push for everything!

Have a look whether any IVF cycles are funded in your area. I know you are just starting the process, but if you know now whether any cycles are available, only if a non smoker or certain BMI, then you know ahead of time and can plan.

It starts with an egg is a handy book to buy off ebay. I found reusable saliva opks far easier and more accurate to read than the expensive urine ones. Best of luck. X

Thanks everyone for your replies!

@CC4712 saliva opks! I've never heard of them. Do you recommend a particular brand?

Also get a FBC done and check thyroid.

Hi, all tests are mentioned here, plus checking egg and semen quality. Hope this helps.

@overthinkersanonnymus The saliva OPK I used was called 'Maybe Baby' but you can buy similar brands online. Its a tiny microscope, you put saliva on it, wait for it to dry then look at the pattern. A fern like pattern means peak fertile stage.
