Anyone taking Sumatriptan and/or Propanalol while pregnant?

Firstly let me clarify I would only take these medications while pregnant, if doctors said it was safe for me to do so.

I'm not currently pregnant but we are trying (have been for some time…) but I suffer from migraines. I’m on propanalol as a preventative- take 40mg morning and the same at night. When I do get them, I take sumatriptan. I asked the dr last time I was in there, and she said I wouldn’t be able to take them while pregnant, but having done a bit of reading since, and suffered quite severely from a few migraines- it doesn’t seem quite that clear cut.

Has anyone had the ok from their dr to take either of these while pregnant? I’m not sure how I’ll manage if I have to come off them both for 9 months. Obviously I’ll do it if I have to- a healthy baby comes first. But I need to keep my job and I’m not sure how possible that will be if I’m still getting such regular and severe migraines as I did before I had these medicines.

My friend was told by her doctor she had to stop taking propanalol when she found she was pregnant.

I got told to come off sumatriptan as I'm pregnant. I've had a few bad migraines and I'm just about 25wks. Paracetamol doesn't cut it but it's all I can take

I was told it was okay to take sumatriptan while pregnant, though only needed to once.

I got terrible migraines pre-pregnancy, but other than one during my first pregnancy I no longer get them. Something about the crazy hormone change actually got rid of them

Hi OP, I suffer from migraines and have taken propananol and zolmitriptan for these. Prior to having my daughter I was taking both but stopped when I found I was expecting. I found out I was pregnant after a truly horrific migraine which was so much worse than normal. After that I didn't get any headaches at all during pregnancy - it was wonderful. Other migraine sufferers I know have had the same - none in pregnancy but I guess it would depend on the cause. Mine are definitely hormonal.

Hi OP I suffer with migraines and although I don't take any preventative medication I do use Sumatripan when I have an attack.

I queried this with my doctor when pregnant last year and was told that it was safe to continue using Sumatripan as and when needed.

I was on Propranolol for migraine pre pegnancy and back on it now but couldn’t take it in pregnancy. But I had no migraine at all whilst pregnant or in the 26 months I BF for! Which was a huge relief.
I do take it again now but they are still much better than they were.

So it is probably worth trying to manage without and seeing how you do. I was one of the annoying people that bloomed in pregnancy- all my usual ailments vanished and I felt absolutely great. Feel like a sack of shite now again though….🙈

Scarecrowrowboat · 07/02/2023 11:25

I was told at my antenatal apts that I could have an occipital block if my migraines were still bad during pregnancy instead of medication. Thankfully both times they stayed fairly low level.

CatastropheAgain · 07/02/2023 11:25

I'm another that hasn't suffered migraines whilst pregnant (and therefore hasn't needed to take the sumatriptan). Obviously there's no guarantee you'll be the same but it might give you some hope!

Can't answer about the propanalol but I had to take sumatriptan twice while pregnant and was cleared by my consultant to do so. This website is really useful re meds while pregnant

Hey OP, midwife and hemiplegic migraine sufferer here!

I took daily propanalol and occasional sumatriptan whilst pregnant which my consultant said was absolutely fine. I did however have to have growth scans because propanalol can in some cases cause baby to be a bit on the small side.

As it were, I developed pre eclampsia anyway, and baby was born at 37 weeks weighing 6lbs,so no issues with his weight whatsoever 😂

Ahh thank you so much everyone, all of this is putting my mind at rest! The thought of struggling through migraines with no actual pain relief and trying to work etc just almost puts me off having a baby!!

I usually need triptans 3x a month but didn't get a single migraine during pregnancy which was the longest migraine-free period in my entire adult life. It was fantastic! I was also a bit worried about the hormone crash after birth triggering a very bad one but it ended up being the same as when I'm on my period.

You probably need to discuss it with the doctor but taking triptans a few times during pregnancy is very unlikely to do any harm. Your own wellbeing is also a crucial factor in having a happy pregnancy.

beamout · 13/02/2023 21:38

I took sumatriptan. I avoided it until I got a migraine that was so bad the doctor had to come to see me. He said that I was fine and on balance the pain and distress I was in with migraine was more concerning

whateveryouwantmetosay · 14/02/2023 06:04

I took sumatriptan in pregnancy. Funnily enough though, I didn't get many migraines in pregnancy!

Sunny866 · 06/04/2023 15:36

Hi there. A bit late to this thread but I am 8 weeks pregnant and have been suffering terribly with a 24/7 headache for the past 2 weeks. Just been to the GP and he has prescribed codeine. If that fails he has prescribed sumatriptan. I’m a bit nervous about taking it though but I do feel awful. I can only describe it as a constant hammer at my head. I’ve never suffered with headaches before so it must be the hormones. @AgeGapBbe did you end up using it?

AgeGapBbe · 06/04/2023 15:42

Still trying… congratulations on your pregnancy @Sunny866 i would say that there’s no way your doctor would have given them to you if they didn’t feel it was safe. You will feel 100% better if you can get rid of the head, I know how it feels when it’s bad like that 😔
