Empty gestational sac - pregnancy of an unknown location

Hello. So yesterday I went for an early scan. I was measuring 6+4 according to the Flo app which I have used to track my cycle for around a year. I have PCOS so cycles vary in length. When I had the scan they said that they could only see a gestational sac with nothing else in it. They have called it a pregnancy of an unknown location which means one of 3 things:

  1. I am earlier than I thought due to PCOS and therefore there is no need to worry. This could be the case as I do tend to ovulate later however I had cervical mucus 2 weeks after my period had started suggesting my cycle was on track to be within the usual 28-30 days. Before this, my average cycle was between 34-39 days which, if I went off this, would measure me at 5+3 yesterday. At around this time, it would be normal to only see a gestational sac.
  1. The pregnancy is not progressing as it should and therefore will result in MC.
  1. It is an ectopic pregnancy. However, I also have seen online that if they have seen a gestational sac in the womb, then an ectopic is unlikely due to this being where the baby develops outside of the womb?

Of course I have spent most of my night/morning googling what this could mean.
There are so many stories out there that say people have experienced this and have gone on to have completely healthy pregnancies.

I have been referred to my hospital and waiting for them to call. They said I should be seen within a week for blood tests and potentially another scan.

I’m just looking for anyone who has been through similar and would be happy to share their experience, whether that be positive or not.

Trying to keep my hopes up but at the same time getting ready to deal with the worst.

It’s such an awful feeling. I went for reassurance and I’ve come away feeling so lost 💔😢

Ahh OP, I'm sorry your scan wasn't the good news you were hoping for ❤️ out of your 3 options, I'd likely say 1 or 2 are more plausible as like you said, the sac if in your womb so that would suggest an ectopic is unlikely.

I had a similar experience in July. I had a scan at 7+5 but was measuring 5+3. They could see yolk sac but no fetal pole or embryo. They booked me in for a scan in 2 weeks to see if anything had changed but where as you have varying cycle lengths, mine were pretty standard so I was fairly certain of my dates and I started miscarrying in that time... they explained this type of miscarriage is called a blighted ovum or an anembyonic pregnancy. Most likely cause is that the embryo had a chromosomal defect and would not have survived. I didn't want medical management and fortunately my body did complete the miscarriage with no intervention. I'm sorry this experience wasn't good news - I trawled MN for hours and found just as many positive stories as I did negative!!

If it helps, I conceived again 2 cycles after and am currently 19 weeks pregnant. I'm keeping everything crossed for you that you come back and post a success story at your next scan ❤️❤️❤️ xxx

I am currently in the process of a PUL. I was admitted to hospital a few days ago, scan was not able to confirm much more than a small sac however they still can't rule out an ectopic. I'm now having blood tests every 48 hours to get an idea of how my pregnancy is progressing. I don't have much further information or a good outcome story yet but just to let you know I'm going through the same xx
