TTC at 30 With Irregular Periods Advice

Hi. I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this on but looking for other people’s stories in similar situations who are and or have been through this.

I’m a 30 year old woman with irregular periods which I’ve had my whole life due to underactive thyroid. I’m on tablets to treat that. My periods have got better but still not regular. I get one roughly around every 6 weeks to 3 months and they last a week. I can tell when I ovulate to a certain extent.

Me and my husband want to start ttc in June but I’m hoping I’ll fall pregnant when I start trying. I’m taking vitex to help regulate my periods more and it does work for me. Will I have problems getting pregnant? I know I should’ve probably got pregnant years ago but I didn’t meet my husband until 3 years ago and I had exes mess me around. Should I do other things e.g. lifestyle changes, supplements, doctors appointments before trying? I’m a healthy weight but want to lose another stone of weight as I want to be on the leaner side before trying. I’m a UK 8 to 10 but want to be a 6 and also don’t want to be big when the baby arrives as that would really wreck my mental health and also I want to avoid a c section lol. My sister in law was lucky enough to get pregnant at 36 lol.

Have you been in that situation? How long did it take for you to get pregnant? Did you have a good pregnancy and birth? Thanks

Hey :) I don’t have a similar experience but hope I can help in any small way I can. Sorry to hear you have issue with an under active thyroid. The NHS web pages have a lot of information regarding pregnancy with an under active thyroid (www.nhs.uk/conditions/underactive-thyroid-hypothyroidism/complications/) you may have already done this, but have you discussed your pregnancy plans with your GP yet? Perhaps they can also put you in touch with groups who have similar experiences?
I would also probably say that trying to lose one stone when you’re already a size 8 is quite substantial. Perhaps you can discuss your weight with your GP if you’re worried to ascertain whether this weight loss is needed? One of my cousins has always been very thin and struggled to get pregnant until she saw a nutritionist and gained some healthy weight. When you say you don’t want to be ‘big’ when the baby arrives, you’re not meant to be the same size as your pre pregnancy body, you’ve just created a life and your body will take some time to snap back, unfortunately with social media and influencers they paint this unrealistic image of what women look like. Hopefully you’ll be so busy with your little one and filled with love that it doesn’t matter :)
Unfortunately with life, you cannot decide against a c section completely as you don’t know what will happen, sometimes birth doesn’t always go the way we hope and having a c section can save lives. Hopefully your birth plan will go completely to plan but there’s never a guarantee.
I wish you all the best on your journey x

My advice is a) you need to be directing questions about your fertility at your GP. They are the only ones who can give you medical advice, especially with your thyroid condition. And b) you really do not need to lose weight and absolutely no one needs to be a size 6. You have no control over how your body reacts to pregnancy and weight gain. It's dangerous for your own health, and an unhealthy attitude towards weight in general, to be considering this as a goal. Low weight can also hinder conceiving. Weight does not equate to weather you have a c section or not.
