Hello everyone.

me and my partner have been trying for a baby for 18 months and it just isn’t happening.
We are both under 30. I have had a child before, partner has not.

im thinking about seeing a doctor but I have bad experiences with them before so was wondering what happens when you first speak to them about trying to conceive? Do they first try medications etc or is it straight into loads of testing?

thank you :)

They will do a sperm count test on your partner and bloods on you to make sure you're ovulating. The outcome will depend on what the tests show. Good luck OP, I've been there and it's tough Flowers

They'll do some tests but some trusts it's 2 years if you are under 30.

As you have a child you aren't entitled to any IVF treatment on the NHS so if you do manage to get tests done ultimately you would have to go privately anyway so may as well cut the wait time down and go straight to a private clinic

@crimbocountdown the NHS will do tests and will also do things like prescribe Clomid, which works for lots of couples.

First thing they will do blood tests on 7dpo for you (they say day 21 but you need to book them to be around 7dpo as they are basing day 21 on a 28 day cycle with a day 14 ovulation) to see if you’re properly ovulating. Then if that’s ok it will be a speed analysis for your partner before they refer to fertility for further testing and scans etc. The blood tests are done quickly and the sperm analysis not too long but I think there’s a bit if a waiting list for the rest so if you can afford private after these initial bits then it will probably be best

Continue what you are doing for the moment. Maybe try aligning your most fertile windows in your cycle with when you are trying (if you aren't already). It is at times still an amazing lottery. It's incredible how easy it is to become pregnant when you don't want to, but how hard it is when you do.
