Fibroid fears - ignore or treat??

Hello everyone,

I am looking for some advice on fibroids and pregnancy. I had a missed miscarriage and resulting haemorrhage at 12 weeks pregnant just before Xmas. I have been trying to find out why the miscarriage happened (I know it is often a random chaotic awful thing, but want to see if I can stop it from happening again if there is something wrong in the womb land).

The hospital couldn’t give any answers and my dr says it was beyond her expertise and referred me to the NHS gyno - this could take 18 weeks to get a consultation and then who knows how long if I need an opp, plus recovery time. I tried to go private but can’t even get a private consultation until mid-Feb!

So I’m wondering if anyone has any tips or experiences with pregnancy with fibroids? Mine is 5cm x 6cm, intramural and posterior - basically, I don’t know whether to have it removed before I try to conceive again and am in my late 30s so feeling rushed.

Any advice would be so so appreciated!

Thank you and happy new year to you all X

I just had a 15x12cm one removed. TTC for 7 years. I'd keep TTC as have heard of many who have had successful pregnancies with them although it does increase the risk of miscarriage and obviously infertility too. However, I had to wait for 2yrs to have mine removed so I wouldn't wait that long to TTC if you see what I mean?

Wow 2yrs! That's so long, I had no idea that you could be kept waiting that long. Thank you so much for the advice, I really appreciate it and think that's the way I'm leaning now. The mmc was so awful but I am already feeling stronger than I thought I would and ready to TTC again, just don't want to rush into it and then waste more time if I mc again argh. I hope your journey gets easier now that you have had your fibroid removed - keeping everything crossed for you!

I conceived in August last year in month one and they identified a fibroid at my 12wk scan in October - I had no idea it was there until then (or when it started growing - I had a baby August '21 and nothing mentioned in my scans then). Sadly I had to have a tfmr for other reasons, but when I spoke to my gp about it he said they wouldn't do anything unless it was causing me a problem, as they don't want to mess around down there given I want to ttc again.

alice198717 · 30/12/2022 18:53

@Hidingawaytoday I'm so sorry to hear that you have been having an awful time. I hope that you have some strong support around you and that you have time to look after yourself.
I didn't even think about damage caused by removing a fibroid, that's really interesting and useful information, thank you. I do think that it might be best to leave alone and continue ttc while I'm on the wait list. Thanks for your help - sending hugs to you.

Don't really have much to add here, except to echo previous poster. I have one, now 3.5cm, subserosal on the outside wall of the uterus at the back. Lost previous pregnancy in summer due to TFMR (chromosonal problem had led to fluid on baby's organs, nothing to do with fibroid)

If anything, I'm more focused on trying to have a baby sooner rather than later, as fibroid is only going to grow, and I was also advised by GP that any procedure or even medication to treat it would risk fertility, rather than help it.

alice198717 · 31/12/2022 11:30

@Thefrogwife thank you so much for your response, I'm so interested that you've had similar advice about the removal being a risk to fertility, this genuinely didn't even cross my mind. Honestly, I really want to try again as soon as possible too - I think it makes sense to go for it from what I've seen so far, especially if the gross fibroid is gonna keep growing. Really hope you get your rainbow baby soon, and I'm so sorry to hear about your loss X

@alice198717 No problem. Obviously I'm not a doctor, so if I were you I'd stay on the list to see the gynaecologist even if you decide to TTC again- you can talk to them about treatment options in the long term after a baby because it sounds like your GP's a bit clueless. Best of luck!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 02/01/2023 22:33

You def need the gyno consult. Book the private one and public if you can be on both lists. Ask if there is a cancellation list to go on also. And call weekly asking if they have any cancellations. You do need to stay on it.
I had a successful embryo transfer Jan 2021 without surgery for fibroids. I also had a biopsy and tonnes of labs done. I was lucky.

ConfusedGin · 02/01/2023 22:49

Can't speak to the TTC element, but I'm top of the NHS gynaecology backlog in my trust with fibroids. 18 months since referral, 1 year since my appointment with the consultant and my op has been cancelled twice on the day. Then it's a 6 month recovery to start TTC post op.

Gynaecology waiting lists have doubled since 2020. Obviously, a lot of people have gone private to try and avoid the NHS waiting lists, which is delaying their service too.

alice198717 · 08/01/2023 10:19

@Thefrogwife yes, I'll defos stay on the list - sounds like I could be there for a very long time! Spoke to my GP again on Friday about any other tests I could get and I can almost hear her shrugging down the phone, she must be worked to the absolute bone but it's so discouraging argh. Thank you for your advice!! Absolute best of luck to you too! Sending all the good vibes x

@Mumtobabyhavoc Thanks so much for your advice. I managed to speak to a midwife and she said that the positioning and size of my fibroid shouldn't be a problem and that it was almost definitely not why the miscarriage happened. Still feel very wary and nervous and have booked some blood tests, still waiting on the genetic testing of the 'tissue,' not sure how long that will take. So happy that you had a successful embryo transfer, congratulations xx

@ConfusedGin 18 months!! And a year! That's absolutely horrendous, I'm so sorry to hear that and hope the cursed fibroids aren't causing you too many problems in your daily life. I hope things improve in the NHS, it's so scary to see it falling apart in front of our eyes. Good luck and thank you for sharing your experience with me Xx

@alice198717 that's positive from the midwife. Are you and dp able to get chromosome screening done to determine if either if you are carriers of any genetic disorders? Have recessive genes? There are private companies that so this. Just a thought. It's so emotional and every person's situation is different. I wish you the best of luck and hope to see an update from you again with good news. 🙏
