To take aspirin or not take aspirin

Hello everyone,

I had a miscarriage several months ago and I’ve been trying to conceive since. I’m very worried and anxious that if I do fall pregnant I will go through an mc again. The doctors normally don’t recommend aspirin unless you’ve had consecutive miscarriages.

I’m not sure if I’m overthinking this, but is it worth taking aspirin or progesterone if I did fall pregnant? What are the risks, if there are any? I’ve only just had the one miscarriage but my mother had several miscarriages back in her day and I’m worried there may be a genetic link of some sort. Should I be over prepared or leave it to fate?

I really wouldn’t without medical advice.
From experience, it’s not a magic bullet and can cause issues so speak to your GP about current data and evidence base surrounding this.

It is worth getting the fertility blood tests done to see if there is anything genetic that can be prevented by aspirin. How would you get hold of progesterone though?

Anyone currently taking aspirin/already gave birth, at what stage did you take it from? Any negative affects? I've read that it can be taken just pre-conception and throughout to 30 weeks to prevent miscarriage.

What issues can it cause if so many people take it? Important to distinguish between baby aspirin 75mg which can be prescribed and the high dose 300mg aspirin which is not prescribed / tends to be for pain.

I had back to back m/c and was contemplating taking aspirin but decided against. One of the girls in TTC after m/c group uploaded a photo from a book which explained why it's not good to take aspirin if you don't need it. If I could remember who it was, would tag them in this but can't remember, sorry.

I’m obviously not a medical professional.

I had ten attempts at IVF , on the final , successful attempt, I took ‘baby aspirin’ on the recommendation of my consultant. It was a a long time ago but I do think there has been more research into it since I was prescribed it by my consultant.
I guess with anything when it comes to fertility, never do anything that you would regret in terms of treatment , medicines and doing things without taking the correct advice .
Good luck x

For me it caused more torrential bleeding as it is an anticoagulant when I next miscarried and the progesterone just made the miscarriage last much longer than it would have otherwise.

IF you have a diagnosed clotting issue causing miscarriage then it may be a treatment option.
If like me you have chromosomal abnormalities with the baby then neither will help.
It needs investigation and a reason to take these drugs, you can’t just throw everything at it and hope for the best.
There needs to be a solid beneficial reason behind putting drugs into a pregnant body surely.

From what I see, as pre 12 weeks isn't in NICE or NHS guidelines, no GP is going to say to take it, so it would always be at your own risk? Has anyone had a GP advise it?

Seems to be only in infertility / recurrent 3 miscarriages/ IVF / private patient settings that those medical practitioners prescribe it. Keen to understand why it works in those settings with no adverse affect on mother/child?

I have had recurrent miscarriages this year and my consultant prescribed me 150mg aspirin daily alongside progesterone. He says that he recommends aspirin to anyone who is TTC after a miscarriage 🤷🏻‍♀️ I actually started taking 75mg prior to the appointment. It’s hard to know what to do without a consultant recommending @Mumbrava I would do whatever you feel comfortable with. Did you go to the EPU with your miscarriage? I really wish I went with my first two to ‘log’ them somewhere as it was only after I went with the fourth that I was referred by my GP on the nhs. Fingers crossed for you.

I'm definitely no expert but would say speak to a medical professional. A close friend of mine haemorrhage after giving birth when she was on aspirin. With her second it was decided she shouldn't take it. I'm sure for most women it is the best thing but obviously there can be side effects.
Good luck OP and I'm very sorry for your loss

So sorry to hear about your miscarriages Flowers

Im not sure if this would help at all but I was advised to take baby aspirin throughout my pregnancy by my consulting team but that was due to high risk of preeclampsia and a few other things. I was told that my husband had to buy it for me as pharmacies would not sell it to me being pregnant. Seemed most odd!

Maybe seek medical advice and do lots of research. Good luck x
