TTC while applying for jobs

Just wanted to find out if anyone is or has previously applied for jobs while TTC.

If you've got the job and found out your are pregnant, how did it go in the end?

My plan was to stay where I am for maternity benefits and to not p a new employer off but after late losses over the last year I really want a new job and progress in my career.

So excited but so nervous at the same time...

I had been ttc for years. Got a new job and was pregnant the month after I started. My boss was really lovely about it , as were my colleagues. Another lady I worked with in the new job told me she was around 12 weeks pregnant when she started. Go for it!

@Isjbot ahh that's so reassuring, thank you. Sounds like such a lovely company to work for!

In a similar position - have been ttc for almost a year. Was originally going to stay in my job but as it is taking longer than expected/hoped to conceive I don’t really feel like I can just stay in my current role indefinitely.

my SIL found out she was pregnant the week of starting a new job and was mortified (thrilled too obviously) but her employers were really lovely about it, she’s now going on her second mat leave in the same role.

@Saturnsmoon it's so unsettling waiting for something to happen but wanting to progress in your career, I wish it didn't feel like I'm lying or hiding things but it's the easiest way to get what you want in this situation.

I'm wishing you the best of luck with your job search and my fingers are crossed for us.

Happy to hear about your sil and knowing that not all companies frown upon new starter Mat leave... I hope I get to work with a company like that!

Hi op,

I work in HR and it happens more than you would think. It’s life, and generally speaking people understand. If they don’t then that’s a huge red flag for you on the company generally and you can make your own choices from there!

The other thing to be aware of is maternity pay. Some companies only make you eligible for enhanced if you have passed your probation period when you reach a certain stage in your pregnancy. Also check the government guidelines on stat maternity pay too to make sure you would qualify considering timing of trying and changing jobs. It might just make sense to skip one cycle TTC but of course all of this is your choice - just go into it with your eyes open.

8 months (if you arrived pregnant) is a good amount of time to have impact and let your skills shine, go for it!

I am in a similar position. Was about to start ttc and had it all planned. Then a job has come up which it is hard for me to not go for.

I've decided to delay ttc until I start the job. So at worst I'll be there 8/9 months before going off.

It is so hard to balance what's easy for you, convenient for the employer and career progression. Ultimately I thought a baby will hopefully come when it comes. There's only a certain amount of control over it. It could take a year or so and I'd really regret staying where I am and feel frustrated.

My only consideration would be the enhanced maternity pay which most employers only give after a specific amount of time employed there. Otherwise I think it’s a great idea to pursue career, good to move forward.
