NATURAL PREGNANCY AFTER IVF?

lottie198 · 02/11/2022 21:27

Has anyone conceived naturally after a first round of successful IVF. I had my little boy last December via IVF and in a year we are going to start trying for another one. We had sub fertility, meaning a reduced chance of pregnancy but not fully infertile.
Soo did anyone conceive their second naturally after their first was ivf ?
Our fertility issues are PCOS so irregular ovulation and low sperm count for context.

We had a successful icsi in 2019 baby born April 2020 we haven't used protection since and no natural pregnancy and one failed fet in August just about to start the second and last fet, I'm sure there will be some success story's tho x

Timpani · 02/11/2022 21:39

icsi in 2011. 1st round due to MF (sub-fertilitly) something like 2 million sperm that were mostly the wrong shape and couldn't swim fast.

Successful 1st go. Baby born 2012.

Breastfed, no cycle really. Had 2 periods in spring 2013 spread apart. Found out I was 8 weeks pregnant when DC1 was 15 months. Baby number 2 born 22 months after DC1.

Tried for number 3 naturally. Did a FET. No luck, even after 5 years+ of not preventing.

Misty999 · 02/11/2022 22:29

Yes took me six rounds of ICSI to conceive my son, 18 months after he arrived I caught naturally with my daughter. We had low ovarian reserve and mild MF.

MrsMo21 · 02/11/2022 23:34

Yep, me!

ICSI October 2020 first round success and DD born 2021.
Surprise natural pregnancy when DD was 5 months old and DD2 currently asleep in my arms!

That's amazing !! Can I ask if you breast fed your first and did your periods return? X

@lottie198 no I didn’t and yes they did - it may have had something to do with it. Not that I’d ever advocate for stopping breastfeeding or think that was the right way of doing it. Just the way it turned out with DD1.

Thank you for sharing that with me. I'm still breast feeding and no periods yet so will try and wean him off the breast when he's about 18 months maybe two years and start trying then x

Many years ago there was a family at our playgroup with one set of ivf twins, then another naturally conceived set about 20 months later.

Fortunately there were very hands on grandparents involved.

Good luck with conceiving OP.

Surely it depends why you are doing IVF in the first place? We can conceive just fine without IVF (12 conceptions in 2 years!) but the reason we are doing it is that poor egg quality means they never get past 6 weeks! IVF in theory will help us locate eggs/embryos with a better chance and try to reduce our recurrent miscarriage rates.

If you are doing IVF because the mechanics of sperm meeting don’t work then it will depend if you can make improvements to that (sperm quality, cleared blockages etc).

Yes I suppose it does... does wanted to hear if anyone has. Our issues are low sperm count (we needed ICSI) and pcos (I ovulate irregular). Not sure where I'll stand fertility wise because currently not had a period due to breast feeding. I am gluten and dairy free now though which is said to help PCOS, I am also a stone lighter than pre pregnancy (I don't know how because I eat so much) x

I’m not sure I agree with the whole reason why thought process; medically, we should never have conceived naturally but we did and I have friends who have unexplained infertility and can’t conceive without IVF second time round after having a baby via IVF first time round.
Its not an exact science by any means and having been through it (and have many friends made in the infertility community) anything is possible.
sometimes it’s just good to hear ‘success’ stories so you can believe that for yourself.x

Yes I suppose it's good to hear other success stories like you said- it gives us hope. I did IVF when I was 25 and was quite poorly from it so I don't know if we would ever do it again anyway. I'm 26 now and have my beautiful boy (a dream come true) but can't help but think about a sibling for him!

@lottie198 I was exactly the same; it’s not because they’re not good enough, it’s because they’re so good you want to do it all over again 🙂 keeping everything crossed for you xx

Hey we've delayed TTC as I haven't been well. Did you have IVF with your first too?

Yes we were really lucky and after our first round of IVF fell pregnant with our first fresh transfer. We've only one frozen embryo from the same cycle.. what about you?

Yes same here, first ivf and first transfer . My little boy is 14 months. We had none to freeze unfortunately. I'm really hoping to conceive naturally for a second baby and am willing to try 2/3 years. We tried 18 months for our first x

You could try some ovulation induction meds (letrozole or clomid) for the PCOS and see if that helps you to conceive naturally? Obviously it doesnt address the low sperm count issue but it would mean you had some months where you could be confident you were ovulating and it's obviously hugely less stressful than ivf.

VixFromThe6ix · 09/03/2023 21:04

My friend had her first daughter through IVF and then got pregnant naturally when her daughter was just 4mos old. Both beautiful healthy girls.

lottie198 · 09/03/2023 21:14

@AnotherNC22 Yes I did three rounds of letrozole before IVF, all of which I ovulated but we didn't conceive. I haven't even got my periods back yet (still breast feeding) so will see where we are at when they return. I'm 2 stone lighter than I was pre pregnancy so I think that may help things maybe. I wasn't massive before , maybe just slightly over weight looking at BMI.

@lottie198 fingers crossed for you! I'd all my eggs in one basket, literally... but never realised despite that frozen embryo being from the 1st free round- it's £3k+ to do a frozen round! It's absolutely floored me if I'm honest, I was thinking of trying again the end of this year when my little one is about 14 months...but realistically we won't have that money with me only going back to work in June. So now I'm thinking we should at least attempt TTC naturally (although I cant even believe I'm having thos conversation with a 6 month old 😅) not right now, but they say after IVF is a higher chance of fertility...

If you guys aren't successful after 2 years, would you look at another round of IVF?

davegrohll · 09/03/2023 21:56

Had 3 fets, the last one worked but unfortunately I miscarried at 8 weeks. Fell pregnant naturally within 2 months, after near enough 7 years of trying. I truely believe the ivf pregnancy kick started something in me... I have pcos so hormones out of whack.

chartreuseabuse · 10/03/2023 04:57

Yes but different husband so... first child born after icsi, four years trying ex had poor motility. Twelve years, and a different husband later and two years after 'giving up' trying but still not using contraceptives I had my second. No fertility issues really but told 'probably too old' and no point in having IVF with own eggs as nothing had happened after several years trying. I was almost 43, very shocked after trying for 8 years of my life in total and never having a positive pregnancy test. I also fell pregnant accidentally at almost 47 and miscarried shortly after I found out. That was a massive shock. I'm now meticulous with my contraceptive during peri which is bizarre after the years of tears trying to get pg over my life when younger!

LivingonaPrayerandGin · 10/03/2023 06:23

@davegrohll glad you got your rainbow baby! 🌈 My LO is 6 months and we've nit really used any protection, aside from abstinence from having a 6 month old 😅 obviously not trying right now so hopefully the kick start lasts a bit longer!
@chartreuseabuse it's crazy how rhe body does whatever it wants! 😅
