At what point will my gp help?

Weve only been TTC for a few cycles so I shouldn’t be worried yet
but dp has varicocele and I’m fairly sure I have PCOS
before TTC I spoke to my gp about getting a PCOS diagnosis and was told there is no point as they do the same tests on everyone for fertility and everyone has to wait the same amount of time, so it wouldn’t speed the process up. I spoke to a second gp who said the same.
so given it seems possible that we may struggle (though I’m still praying we don’t) at what point do we go back and ask for help?

and if anyone has any tips or advice or success stories please tell me because sometimes I’m feeling so negative and we’re only just beginning the process

I believe it is a year in most areas

I have PCOS and we conceived in 5 cycles and now have a 2 week old baby girl

How old are you OP as this will make a difference depending on what area you're in (you don't have to tell us that obviously!)

I’m 31
my cycles have never been regular until 18 months ago they just magically seem to have regulated, so I’m really hoping that’s a good sign. I can’t believe I spent so many years worrying about accidentally getting pregnant and now suddenly it seems like there’s so much that can go wrong making it feel like the odds are completely against us!

Hi there,
It really depends on where you live and your age.
if under 35 , you need to be trying for at least 1 year before gp will refer you ( here its 2 years) or 6 months over 36.
Getting a pcos diagnosis won't speed things along, you just have to wait in line like everyone else with fertility issues.
However , getting a pcos diagnosis isn't just related to fertility. It can affect your overall health. If you have discussed symptoms with your gp and your gp suspects you may have pcos then they should investigate this. Firstly to rule out any other condition but secondly as I said, pcos affects your overall health and your at risk of other conditions. it's not just about fertility.
For example women with pcos are often insulin resistant which puts you at higher risk of diabetes and should receive preventive care for it. ( I have pcos and I'm pre diabetic among so many other health problems due to my pcos )

Since youve only been trying a few cycles theres absolutely no reason to suspect anything may be wrong with your fertility.
Having pcos dosent mean you will defintely have difficulty getting pregnant since many women with it do conceive easily.
Unfortunately I'm not one of those , and I'm one of the ones who have really struggled.

May I ask why you suspect you have pcos ? You need at least 2 of the obvious pcos symptoms before gp will suspect it.
Diagnosis is usually typical of a blood test and scan ( although you don't have to have cysts on ovaries to have pcos)
The blood tests will be a more accurate picture

Worth mentioning that private fertility assessment is about £600 all in, including scans for you and semen analysis for husband - can be worth doing. Still need to wait on NHS but they will then use your fertility assessment results in my experience

Thank you
the concern is of course that dh also has varicocele so I’m worried about the combination, though I do feel better now things are regular.

@MK85 my gp suggested I may have it after an unrelated blood test and discussion of symptoms. I have a few symptoms and several of the women in my family including mum and sisters have it.

@IWillBeWaxingAnOwl thank you, we may start saving for that now and if we get pregnant before then, it can buy some baby supplies.
