Starting a new job - how long to wait before ttc?

Hi ladies,

I'm just wondering how soon after starting a new job did people start ttc. I'm thinking of trying to hold out until the end of the year, if I can....I start the new job in a few weeks.

Problem is, should you wait until you are 100 per cent ready or start earlier because who knows how long it might take....

Thanks,

Cosmo

This is a really tricky one - I recently turned down a job because we are ttc and I thought it would look a bit bad to get pg straight away.

Was pleased at first as I got a bfp that month but then miscarried and now its been a few months and I kind of think it might have been worth taking it!

If you start the job 1st March, you could start trying in July and then say you pg in July you would be 12 weeks mid October, say, and would prob need to tell them and then you would be on maternity a year after you started, which would be fine.

And that's the earliest if you start trying in July!

PS - If you start trying and you're not ready, I think you will get a weird feeling about it all and realise that you should wait longer.
Go with your instincts.

Thanks Millie. Before you start trying I think it is pretty normal to think 'we might get pregnant the first month' and you work around that possibility, which is why I was thinking trying end of this year. But, if it does take 6 months plus I think I'm going to be thinking 'why didn't we try sooner?"
Also I guess I worry what the new job will think, but I suppose everyone has to deal with telling work......probably overthinking it as usual!

I'd look at the maternity leave policy first. There is often a minimum period before company specific benefits kick in. Often it's a year, but worth checking.

Thanks Pistachio and Nooka. I've heard they have a good maternity policy but not sure how long you have to be there before the extra benefits kick in, so will need to check that once I start.

Pistachio - I think you are right about there 'never being a right time' when it comes to a job. Guess you just have to follow your instincts.
