Gynaecologist suggested Myo- inositol

Hi,
I just had my fertility scan to make sure there’s nothing up with my tubes and ovaries. All seems fine, so the problem is I don’t seem to be ovulating.
i haven’t been to the actual fertility clinic yet to get a treatment plan, but the gynaecologist who scanned me just randomly recommended I take myo-inositol and gave me a leaflet for a pill you can get over the counter.
i googled it and it looks like it’s for PCOS. She didn’t say anything about cysts during the scan, and also my periods are not that irregular (they go from 32 to 37 days).
now I’m confused, if I don’t have PCOS why is she suggesting it?
what would you do? Talk to the fertility clinic first before taking it?
thanks!

It's not just for pcos, this supplement can help to improve fertility by helping you to
Ovulate and regulate this also. I don't have pcos but struggled to get pregnant so took this for 3 months and it worked ( it can take a few months for it to build up in your system and work) . I ovulated for the first time on it at the 3 month mark and got pregnant immediately. My ovulation tests were always negative before this. Also it reduced some of my anxiety in general so win win. Baby is 9 months old now.

There is no downsides to taking it so give it a try. I took the powder version 6mg per day in my coffee.

It was regulated my periods as mines were the same as yours prior to taking it.

My cycles are 60 plus days. Have been taking it for months and no joy.

@anotherscroller Hi there, im no qualified expert but Its a bit odd that you were recommended myo inositol in my opinion. I've researched myo inositol for countless hours and read numberous studies and there's no evidence to date that myo inositol can improve fertility in non pcos women. Not that ive came across anyway. I do recall reading a study that concluded that myo inositol in non pcos women had an adverse outcome. It significantly affected follicular maturation and number of oocytes retrieved. Not good.
I've known a few women online who said taking myo without pcos completely messed up their periods , so do be careful and cautious.

It's recommended for pcos women as pcos is associated with insulin resistance which affects ovulation . For some women with pcos dealing with the insulin resistance itself can restore irregular periods and promote ovulation, thus helping with fertility. ( not the case for me) Having pcos affects egg quality and mature eggs not being released.
If your issues aren't associated with insulin resistance then I'm not sure why you would have been advised to take it.
Ive seen 3 gynaecologists this year and not one of them has advised me to take it and I have pcos.
For pcos , studies have shown myo inositol can be effective but its not a medically backed supplement therefore she couldn't advise to take it , otherwise I suppose she could be liable. They go by the book and the drug of choice for pcos is metformin , I was only advised to take folic acid, vitamin d and pregnacare or something similar alongside the metformin.
When I mentioned I was taking myo to my first and third gynaes , they made a note of it just but didn't offer an opinion regarding if they recommend it.

Myo inositol works similar to the way merformin does , it helps the insulin resistance. As I said, if you don't have an issue with insulin resistance I don't see what benefit it's going to offer you.

You don't always need cysts on your ovaries to have pcos (i dont), but they can determine it from symptoms and blood tests. I have irregular cycles, high androgens, excess hair , low progesterone .
Have you had any blood tests?
My blood tests confirmed I don't ovulate and I was prescribed clomid by gynaecologist

@MK85 gosh, thank you so, so much for this message.
you have saved me hours of googling, but you have also confirmed my instinct to not take any extra supplements (currently taking omega 3, vit D, iron and a pregnancy vitamin) before talking to the clinic about our results.
I’ve had blood tests and been told there are all fine. I don’t have any symptoms that look like PCOS. So my problems must be caused by thyroid or something else.
again, thanks a million!

also @GreenIsle thanks for your experience. I would definitely not rule it out, just want to get a second medical opinion first.

Just to update, I never took it because it was just too expensive for me, and my clinic said the evidence was insufficient that it really helped.
I got pregnant on my fourth cycle of medication to induce medication ❤️ after 15 months of trying
