GP appointment

Hi,

I have just booked an appointment to see my GP to discuss having tests done due to mine & DH's age and because we've been trying to conceive for a while.

We would rather find out if we have problems now instead of making plans around a baby that may never come.

I have just checked my Flo app and my appointment is right in the middle of my fertile window.

My question being if you have ever had an initial appointment with your GP do they do any sort of internal examination at the first appointment or is it literally just a discussion? What is asked?

I don't want to DTD the day before then have to have an internal! 🤣

Any advice would be great. x

Hi, I don't have an answer to your question but I am in the same position as you and will be trying to make an appointment soon so I am watching with this with interest!

Hi @hevann if it’s literally your first appt it’s extremely unlikely you will be examined. I went to the GP for the same reason as you and the first appointment was them asking me the basics. I then had an appointment with a nurse a few days later who had to perform an STI test on me. Even though we’ve been married for years it was the first step, but this was a few days later. They will arrange for your partner to Produce a sample but from memory this will take a bit longer to arrange as normally at a hospital or seperate clinic. I know all GP/trusts are different so it might be slightly different for you but either way it’s very unlikely you’ll be examined first day

Different GPs may handle things differently, but mine basically just talked through everything, gathering info and then referred me to the specialist at the hospital. It was only when I went to see the specialist (a few weeks later) that I had any tests done. Like I said, your GP may handle things differently, but that is just my experience. Best of luck x

Doubt you’ll have an internal (have been referred for infertility previously) as it won’t add anything (unless you’re about to say you think you have two vaginas or something then they might want to check..!)

Thank you everyone!

I thought an internal on a first appointment would be very unlikely but I wasn't sure. When you Google it only comes up with when you see a specialist.

After I posted the Doctors actually called me back and said that it would just be a telephone conversation now 🙄

@Ihatethinkingofusernamez I'll keep you posted with what happens if you don't get an appointment before I have mine.

Sorry no advice but interested in others experience with all this. I have GP appointment booked for the 26th (telephone call) I am 35 and partner is 45 and will be 6 months of TTC. Had some conflicting advice from my surgery…. one doctor told me they won’t investigate for at least a year despite our ages as we are a ‘healthy couple’, another told me they can arrange some tests to be carried out after 6 months because of our ages…so who knows what the truth is 😆
I was so close to booking private tests last week but didn’t go ahead as was £500 and thought maybe I was jumping the gun a bit before I have even spoken to GP but if the GP route takes months I think I will be tempted to get some answers privately…

I had my initial GP appointment last week. They can’t do much themselves to help but you have to start there unless you go private. I now have blood test appointments booked for CD3 and CD21 although my CD3 (actually CD4) has been cancelled as it was Monday so will have to wait until the cycle after the next cycle now as CD5 will be too late.

I have a child already (I’m 37) and my partner has no children (he’s 32). Because I have a child already and he doesn’t they won’t do any more than do my bloods unless he also has a sperm analysis. Once I’ve had my 2 bloods and he’s had his sperm analysis they will go through the results with us and if they are all normal we will be referred to a fertility clinic as they can’t do more. At the fertility clinic they will be able to look into things further but because I have a child already we won’t be entitled to treatment like ivf on the nhs of course. So they will try and find what’s wrong (if anything) but I know fertility clinics have around a 9 month wait time at the moment so I’m hoping I’ll be pregnant before then
