Anybody over 35 and ttc

Hiya
Just wondering if there is anyone on here who is over 35 and ttc.

I am 37 and have been ttc for 4 cycles now.
I am getting paranoid that it won,t happen because of my age.

Is there anybody likewise who feels like me or who can give me some encouragement.

It took us 22 months to conceive DS, the first ten months we weren't trying hard but the last 12 we def were! I was 35 when I eventually conceived and gave birth. The month it happened I had started acupuncture and herbal medicine and in hindsight I think I had been pregnant a few months before but it had ended as a "late period". I think that the difference the acupuncture made was a deep feeling of relaxation at the end of the month, so much so that I really didn't 'mind' if I was for the first time in ages, so it was a surprise when it was a BFP

Hi Londonlottie

How long did it take to get referred for tests? My GP said 6 months because of age (36).

Like you all my freinds have kids - some of them are on number 3! I think its taken me a while partly because i've seen what theyve all been through - I've had 2 freidns who;ve lost kids - one at 10 days, one at age 4 and that really brings home to you how life changing it all is when a baby is lost but i think i;m ready.

Good luck with your tests

Hey there. I'm 35, DH is 40, and have been ttc for 10 months, but not really checking temp/cycle or using ovulation sticks or anything, as find the idea of having to monitor and perform on demand quite stressful. Did a test this morning as period due, and I'm going to a party tonight so wanted to see if it was OK to drink! Test was positive, to my astonishment (for no reason at all I'd just got it into my head that we wouldn't be able to conceive - probably just protecting myself against disappointment).

Anyway, don't know if this helps, but after hearing that caffeine can affect chances of conception by up to 50% (and knowing that I'm very susceptible to it), I gave up caffeine on New Year's eve. Also cut back even more on drinking, and stopped taking headache pills, which I did have a tendancy to pop a bit too frequently. And bingo! This could all be a coincidence, and more conscientious people probably do all these things already, but it seemed worth sharing...

siurana · 02/02/2008 16:26

Hi daisyj

Congratulations!

I like you am not trying all the prediction stuff - just having regular BD.

I think youre right about worrying/focusing too much - keep having freinds who have given up hope and then suddenly when they are "not trying" it happens.

The caffiene thing - as i've given up alcohol, any drugs (painkillers etc) I thought my one vice was the one cup of coffee i have a day but might go to decaff after reading your post!

good luck hope you are feeling well

Hi
Iam 37 I started ttc at the end of August 07.

Unfortunately my AF went awol for 3 months as soon as I started ttc.
I went thorugh numerous pregnancy tests only for them all to be a BFN I got really upset as I didn't understand what was going on.

The cause of my absent AF turned out to be a underactive thyroid.
I am now on thyroxine and my AF has since returned.
I am a bit confused atm as even though I have been ttc since august 07 do I count from then as the time I have been ttc.
Or should I count from when my cycle returned in December.
Also a bit confused about my cycle length didn't really pay much attention before I started ttc and never got a chance to get a accurate idea when AF decided to go awol.

I did vow to get a acurate picture on return of my cycle and since its return I have had a 33 day cycle and a 22 day cycle.

I really do not know what to think.

daisyj · 03/02/2008 11:06

Thanks for all good wishes It's so nice to be able to share - have told a couple of friends who are new mums, as couldn't contain myself, but it's so hard feeling like I have to keep quiet with family, etc., for a while longer.

crazedupmom - it seems to be a well-known phenomenon that your cycle goes up the spout once you start ttc - it's as if your body knows you want something from it. And with your added complications...

My cycle has always been variable (from 26-35 days), but went even weirder when I started ttc, and my doctor suggested starting ttc from 5 days after end of AF and then every two days for 10 days after that. We never really quite managed that, but it sounds sensible to me. As does siurana's suggestion about 3 times a week (if you can muster the energy!

Hi All

Daisyj - youre very welcome - hope you are feeling well.

I know this is slightly off the subject but i wondered if anyone had any advice about exercise when youre TTC (apart from the obvious!) I do pilates and was wondering wether all that pelvic floor stuff might be a bad thing at very early stages - has anyone heard anything that suggests it might not be a good idea?

Thanks

blueberry79 · 03/02/2008 17:40

DaisyJ - congratulations . I read your post and was interested by your comment about caffeine and decreased chances of conception. I am 38 have been ttc (first time) for 10 cycles or so with no success so am looking for any helpful info. I don't drink alcohol or coffee but probably have around 4 cups of tea a day - presumably that has to go too...?

MrsTittleMouse · 03/02/2008 18:09

I did Pilates when I was TTC. The instructor told me that it was OK while trying, but that I should tell her as soon as I was pregnant as she would need to modify a lot of the exercies.

siurana · 03/02/2008 18:21

Thanks Mrs T M for tip

daisyj · 04/02/2008 09:56

Hmm, don't know about tea, blueberry. I drink green tea, rather than black, usually about 3 cups a day. That doesn't have so much caffeine, and as it's only coffee that sends me loopy (overexcited and mild palpitations - but I do like it!), I thought I'd try that first. As I said, it could all be a coincidence, but I guess it would be worth a try. I'm sure there's somewhere you could get more information (anyone out there know?), or your GP might have advice. It was just something my cousin, also ttc, mentioned to me recently - I'll ask her if she knows more, too, although she's in China, so might take a while to get a reply!

beaniesteve · 11/02/2008 16:08

Fabbo! Now I feel bad. Wanted to be chilled about being so 'Old' but now I feel like I must be barren because I am 37 and not pregnant yet!

donbean · 11/02/2008 16:12

Can i ask what you all mean when you say "cycle" does it mean month?

donbean · 11/02/2008 16:15

ahhh i see it does mean monthly doesnt it!
i have no ide how long my "cycle" is i never write any thing down and cant remember.
is it vitally important?

i kind of know when i am ovulating on account of the crippling pains i get
also my overwhelming need to stab some one to death for putting the fork in the spoon drawer........

my hormones are rather predictable actually!!!

beaniesteve · 11/02/2008 16:30

DonBean - this is really spooky but I think you must have the same name and the same nicname as me in Real Life!

donbean · 12/02/2008 12:43

Really!?
my name is based on my rl name and the name we call our son.
half n half if you will.
Are you called donbean at home?

Davidsmom · 15/02/2008 01:14

Hi,

I conceived at 37 on the first "go"/cycle while drinking numerous cups of coffee a day, holding down a stressful job, doing quite physical regular exercise, having irregular periods (checked for PCOS) and on the basis that we would just stop taking precautions and thought "if it happens it happens".

Had DS at 38, noone batted an eyelid at the Hospital. Had C section but age not mentioned as one of the reasons.

Now before you call me SmugDavidsmom and send annoyed replies I now know we were we damn lucky to conceive him so quickly and I have realised I like babies and REALLY want another. So......likely to have a long wait if indeed we ever get there to balance the whole luck thing out.

Just wanted you to know you dont HAVE to be squeaky clean habit wise to get there but am sure it all helps.

Emmsy1 · 15/02/2008 05:27

Hello ladies! I had my first baby just before I was 35. My 2nd 36, 3rd 38 and my last 39 (very greedy!! I am now 42 (43 in 2 months) and have had 2 m/c over the last year, I got a BFP 2 days ago and am very excited (also worried about another m/c)
I have been temping for 18 months and doing OPK's (ovulation predictor Kits) I wouldn't have conceived this month if it wasn't for the OPK as I ovulated very early! I had EWCM (egg white cervical mucus) on day 6 of cycle so I decided to do a opk on day 8 got a positive so I B/D on evening of day 8 and again in the morning of day 9 and I got my BFP 10 days past ovulation!! good luck xx

beaniesteve · 25/02/2008 12:23

Donbean - my real name is Donna and I was called Bean for years as a kid. I think Bean is a name a lot of people give their bump or their baby

Emmsy1 - good to hear your story
