Irregular periods and conception... Experiences?

Hi all. My partner (34) and I (31) are on cycle 3 of TTC and no luck yet. The issue I have is that my periods are very long and often irregular. Cycles are usually 43 +/- 6 days. Makes the whole process long which can be frustrating!

Is there anyone else in the same boat or has anyone had the same experience and managed to conceive without help/rigorous tracking. I'd love to hear your stories.

x

Hi @arebee ,

Thought I would give you my story - I have very very irregular periods. One every 3-4 months. I thought it would be a real struggle to get pregnant. I found out I was pregnant with my first in 2019 (a total surprise).

Fast forward to April this year and we decided we would try for a second. I started taking vitamins that I have seen recommend on these boards to help regulate periods and I got a period in May (first since feb). Continued with the vitamins and started to casually track ovulation. DH and I dtd every few days. Its now September, I had no sign of period but did a pregnancy test on Sunday and it was positive after a 132 day cycle.

CB says 3+ weeks so i have no idea how far along I am. Waiting on a early pregnancy scan.

Just to say it is entirely possible with irregular cycles, just have to baby dance more throughout the month and not rely on when you think you are ovulating!

I would recommend Myo inositol for cycle regulation and if you are overweight, try to healthily lose some weight. You could also ask the GP to do day 3 and 21, 28 bloods to see if you are ovulating as the risk with longer cycles is that you aren't

Thank you for sharing your story @Irishgirl55 💕it's great to know a success story!

@IWillBeWaxingAnOwl I'm a healthy weight, eat well and run 3/4 times per week so I don't think the common issues around fertility associated with being overweight would apply here, but would you still recommend Myo inositol? I have wondered about other supplements too. I have been taking Folic Acid this month and do like a more natural approach!

@arebee our fertility clinic told us they recommend it for anyone with irregular cycles but I would v much encourage you to do your own research too ☺️

I suffered with irregular cycles for years. In the end they discovered some polyps which I had removed. That was the February and I was pregnant by March. Hard to know if my cycles had actually corrected post polypectomy as I am 8m PP but only had about 3 periods.

An update in case anyone's interested (and also to keep a record of when things happened!).

I spoke to the GP, told a small white lie that we've been 'trying' for longer than we had which isn't entirely untrue as we hadn't been great at preventing for about 3 years! But I'm going in for blood tests and a pelvic ultrasound so fingers crossed it might speed up the process a bit.

Hopefully if there's something going on they can help or at least get things rolling for these other options which usually take so long!

@arebee hey! So I'm currently ttc and I have perfumes normally around 45 days five or take 5ish! It's so frustrating as I feel like I get so many less chances then I should, my ovulation falls around day 30, I'm currently taking vitamins to try and help reduce it but it hasn't worked yet, next month I will be taking soy isoflavones again as I took them with my first and they reduced my cycle by about a week! I do know I ovulate as I track and temp xx

arebee · 05/10/2022 13:11

@Moosh18 sounds really similar to me. Did you ever get a diagnosis as to why they were so long? I haven't heard of isoflavones I'll do some research! ❤

No no explanation unfortunately, I do sometimes get cysts on my ovaries so could be that...

Soy isoflavones are natural ( they call it natures clomid) so can help induce ovulation, I think it brought ovulation to around cd21-24 when ttc my daughter, I have whackie cycles and have managed to get pregnant three times, two sadly ended in MC at 7 and 12 weeks,

What I would do is go with some info, track ovulation if you can as if you go with that info it may speed things up for you! X

I have extremely irregular periods
( currently 4 months since last bleed 😒 )
Conceiving has been a real challenge for us.
Have you been to your gp regarding your irregular cycles ?

Moosh18 · 06/10/2022 05:57

@MK85 yeah they ran all the usual tests, for lacking vits, thyroid etc, but because they've regulated (ish) to 45/50 they aren't too concerned. It's just such a long time, not as long as yours though obviously I totally understand how hard that must be! Do you track Inbetween? Before DD my cycles would be months and months apart, then a short one then long again, the only thing that seems to of somewhat regulated is the conceive plus, the soy worked before too x
