Early scan- small embryo and gestational sac

Hi everyone,

I’m wondering if anyone has been in a similar position and is able to offer any reassurance? I know ultimately it is a case of waiting but it would be nice to hear is this has turned out well for others.

I had an early scan today and estimated I was 8W2D based on LMP (07/07/2022). However, the sonographer said that I was measuring smaller at 7W2D and the gestational sac even smaller at 6W3D. Fetal pole and heartbeat seen. I am returning in 2 weeks to check growth but am feeling very anxious about this, particularly as we had an early miscarriage back in May.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

I'm not a medico. So you will have some more accurate info soon. In my experience, they are quick to tell you the risks so that you are aware (to cover themselves) even if those risks for you are actually very small.

My experience was that the scan was very accurate for some things - esp. physical development - but not so good for timings and sizes. So checking for heart, spinal, organ development, etc was good.
Because my husband was away at certain times, I knew exactly when I'd conceived and how many days/weeks along I was but the scan did not agree.
I asked why there were no scans at the end of pregnancy to determine whether a Caesarean would be best but midwives themselves told me that scans after 20 weeks are not helpful because they cannot gauge accurately the size/weight of the baby.
So my understanding is that a scan is good for screening to determine major and even minor physical issues but not size.
Also, in the past, some doctors had a rule of thumb that cm of bump from ribs to pelvis should match weeks of pregnancy but many friends have reported larger or smaller bumps for the weeks.

I'm sorry @J1005, I was in a similar situation. Measuring a week behind isn't such a big deal, especially with a good HB, but if the gestational sac is too small that can be a worrying sign. I had that with my previous pregnancy where the sac was around 2 weeks behind LMP and as I started researching this I discovered that if the difference between CRL and gestational sac diameter is less than 5mm, chances of miscarrying are very high statistically. Mine was barely 3mm and that was pretty much doom. I ended up with a MMC at 10 weeks that stopped growing shortly after the scan at 6-7 weeks. I'm sorry to be the shit messenger. I also had a chemical before the MC but am currently pregnant again and all is well so far at 14 weeks. I really hope it's better news for you but also there is always hope x

Hi all,

looking for some advice or past experiences. Im currently 6 weeks pregnant after a 5day embryo transfer. Went for an early scan but was measuring a few days less than I should have been. Sac and embryo were both seen but no heartbeat.

The clinic wasnt very reassuring and told me to test again in two weeks and book another scan if still BFP….

could I have had a miscarriage and not know due to IVF meds?
