Very light periods after miscarriage

Natpat81 · 24/08/2022 09:10

Hi all

I am wondering if anybody else has had ridiculously light periods (almost non existent) after miscarriage as I am worried there is something still wrong with me.

I am TTC again after a missed miscarriage in May at 8 weeks (measuring 6w 2d).
The miscarriage lasted 2 months and I had 8 weeks of bleeding every day (2 x medical management plus MVA). In July I finally had a negative pregnancy test and clear scan.

Since then I have had 2 “periods” but 7 days of spotting would be a better description. Hardly any cramping. My periods were fairly light before the MMC but at least there was a proper bleed, not just spotting. And I’m pretty sure for the second period at least I ovulated (positive OPK, sharp ovulation pain same day).

Im really worried there is something wrong as I don’t think these are proper periods, and that it might be affecting my chance to conceive again. At the EPU they told me to expect a large bleed for my first period, then when I told them it was light I was told it’s fine, will probably be heavy next time. But still really light. (BFN, not implantation bleeding).

Has anybody else experienced this? I’m sure if I speak to a doctor they’d just say it can take a while to settle down. But I’m 40 and I don’t have a while!

Thanks

I’m in a very similar boat. I had a missed miscarriage last year and very light periods ever since, they are getting lighter only lasting 1-2 days, not heavy. I had some fertility tests, scans and blood tests which have come back normal. I’ve just turned 40 so also feeling worried with regards to my age and being able to conceive. Hope it helps to know your not alone xx

I’m looking into acupuncture and fertility massage to see if they may have any effect.

Nik84 · 28/09/2022 16:19

I miscarried at 10 weeks in January and then my first period was really light and about 10 days long and my second was about 7 days and also very light. I have really heavy periods so I was worried about it. Next cycle and since has been back to normal x

Overandabove1 · 28/09/2022 17:21

I had two very light periods after my mmc. By the 3rd period things were back to normal

Cegbee · 28/09/2022 17:38

I'm the same after my MMC and MVA, no pain, really light even after being told it would be heavy. No advice really as I'm still TTC again and on 6th cycle, just another of the many things I worry about in this process!

Natpat81 · 29/09/2022 13:31

Thanks for your replies all, helpful to know I am not alone. I’m waiting for my appointment for the fertility clinic, but I suspect (/hope!) the tests will all come back normal given that my cycle is regular.
@Van30 i would be interested to know if you have any success from the alternative therapies as this is something I wondered about too.

@Natpat81 I’ll let you know how it goes. Hope your fertility appointment goes well let us know how you get on. Not sure if your already taking it, but I read the ‘It starts with the egg book’ and it suggests certain supplements and so I’ve started taking Ubiquinol and a prenatal vitamin recommended in it. Just trying to do as much as I can and hoping for the best. Wish you all the best too xx

Natpat81 · 03/10/2022 14:38

Thanks @Van30 good luck to you too. I will have a look for the book as well x

@Natpat81 I know this post is a few months out of date but just wondered how you were doing?
I too had a mc last December and my periods have been very light since, regular but very light.
I was on the pill for around 15 years prior to the mc so I'm wondering what effect it has had on my cycles overall.

Natpat81 · 06/11/2022 17:30

Hi @Poppy2764 sorry to hear you are going through something similar. No change here, still very light periods. I have a hospital appointment on Thursday so will see what they say. I have spoken to a gp but they didn’t seem concerned as my periods are regular. I still think something is not right though.
I was also on the pill for around 15 years, but when I came off I had normal periods before my miscarriage so didn’t know if it was connected to the light periods now.
have you spoken to any doctors?

OP posts:
Poppy2764 · 06/11/2022 20:42

@Natpat81 I have heard from quite a few people with similar issues that the doctors haven't been concerned but I'm a worrier so overthink it!
I have only seen a nurse who is doing some hormone profiles for me so who knows?!
I think your mind just goes into overdrive when ttc and you suddenly focus on things you have never noticed before. The light periods issue does seem to be very common though post pill. I spoke to a friend and she said she didn't have af for 6 months and still got pregnant so I think there's hope. Fingers crossed for us both. 😊

Hi there
have been searching for advice, came across your post. Mmc in early April, medical management twice as first time didn’t work didn’t stop bleeding until end of May. First period after was heavier than ones before I got pregnant but since July each period has been getting lighter and lighter feels more like spotting. I’m 38, a bit worried as TTC since July and nothing yet. Started acupuncture two weeks ago hoping that will help. Wondering what to say to the gp for tests wise, worried they will fob me off as just stress. Any advice would be gratefully received xx

Natpat81 · 10/11/2022 11:37

Hi @TheVikingGirl

Sorry to hear what you are going through and that you’re worried about light periods as well.
I had my first hospital appointment this morning and the doctor said I was eligible for one round of IVF due to my age. I was surprised as the miscarriage was only 6 months ago I thought they’d have expected me to be trying again for longer.
I mentioned the light periods and she said as part of IVF they would do some scans to check and monitor the lining of the womb. She said in most cases anyway the drugs they give you for IVF increase the lining anyway so she’d expect it to be ok for an embryo transfer, but they would check just before and if not freeze the embryos whilst they investigate further. She did mention Ashermans syndrome (assuming it had already come up on google) and she said it’s very rare, especially now where they don’t do scraping for miscarriage treatments.
So this part isn’t helpful for you I’m sorry, but regarding the tests to check the womb lining it seems like it would need to be an ultrasound scan, and in the later part of the cycle (ie not straight after the period). So don’t know if your gp could refer you for a scan - worth a try. Also worth asking when you can get referred to a fertility clinic - my gp said they would refer me after 6 months due to my age (39 at the time of first speaking to her). But there’s a 35week waiting list. Fortunately I was referred in March just before I became pregnant and miscarried and I stayed on the list so just got my appointment now.
Wishing you luck

@Natpat81

Thank you so much for all of the advice and information. I’m so pleased for your round of IVF, that’s great and praying for you all goes well 💐🤞🏼
I will definitely contact the GP to request further tests. I doubt I will be eligible for IVF as my partner has 2 older daughters. Would be interested to see what the cost would be but hopefully the initial tests I could get through the NHS. 35 weeks is such a long time, I better get moving. Will see what I can get investigation wise on NHS before I go private.
I had googled and Ashermans came up which got my very worried, even tho I didn’t have a Dnc worried the two lots of tablets and longer bleed could have left scar tissue.
it’s all such an emotional roller coaster, hoping it works out ok for us ❤️

Natpat81 · 21/11/2022 10:50

Hello,
I hope everyone is well. Just wanted to update you that I am 4.5 weeks pregnant, so it’s definitely possible to get pregnant with very light (mainly spotting) periods.
I am very nervous about how it will go over the next few weeks, but thought it might give some reassurance to people that it is possible.
Wishing you all good luck as well x

Aww that’s amazing, wish you all the very best! You have given me hope ☺️ Do you mind if I ask did you go through ivf. I’ve been referred for ivf too, just not sure how long waiting list will be, I’m 40 so just weary of months that pass. Hope all goes well for you xx

TheVikingGirl · 22/11/2022 07:41

@Natpat81 congratulations! This is so wonderful! I’m really happy for you and praying all goes smoothly ❤️

Thanks for sharing it’s given me hope, I went to the gp and they said that mine seemed normal and to keep trying u too Christmas and then they will give me further tests and test my partner too. Bit worrying as I’m 38 and feel like I’m losing time but this gives me lots of hope which is what I needed, thanks again 🙂

Natpat81 · 23/11/2022 10:43

@Van30 no I was due to start the IVF after Christmas. It’s worth phoning your hospital and asking how long their waiting list is - mine didn’t voluntarily tell me they just sent me a letter saying they’d be in touch with an appointment. Then if it is really long also worth asking if there are any initial parts you can pay for privately (if able to) which would speed up the process a bit. Wishing you the best of luck x

@TheVikingGirl thank you, hope all goes well for you too x

@Natpat81 congratulatjons on your pregnancy! ❤️ I’m going through a similar thing at the moment and am desperately scouring the internet for reassurance - MMC in Oct ‘22 with surgical management and have barely had a period since, just a few days of spotting like clockwork every 28 days. So reassuring to see you’re expecting after going through pretty much the same!

Natpat81 · 17/01/2023 08:23

Hi @FrankieSpencer sorry to hear you’re going through the same but glad I can provide some hope for the future. Currently 13 weeks and had no problems so far x

Hi everyone, just wondered if there were any updates from this thread? I had a very protracted MC earlier this year and now on first ‘period’ after hysteroscopy for RPOC but it’s barely there. Worrying for all kinds of reasons, health and TTC! Experiences welcome.

Natpat81 · 31/07/2023 23:14

Hi @Oxalis00

Im really sorry to hear about your MMC, and that it was drawn out, I’m glad you’ve had your first period though.

My little girl was born last week, I had no issues with the pregnancy.

Wishing you the best of luck x

@Natpat81 aww congratulations on your new addition, that’s wonderful news 🥰

@Oxalis00 so sorry to hear about your MMC 💔 unfortunately since I first replied to this thread, I was in fact diagnosed with Asherman’s Syndrome - it’s really not as rare as the Drs make out, I had to pay privately for treatment as no one would take me seriously. However, the operation to fix the scar tissue was completed under hysteroscopy, so the surgeon who did your procedure for the RPOC would have been able to rule it out then & there, so hopefully Asherman’s shouldn’t be a problem for you 😊 plus since my hysteroscopy in May, I’m now 5 weeks pregnant!

Oxalis00 · 01/08/2023 07:01

Thank you both, and congratulations all round!

CharTT33 · 31/10/2023 21:37

I had a missed carriage in January and then a medical management which went on till April then May I had a hysterscopy to remove retained products. First two periods were both on time and but super light barely filling one pad and then I fell pregnant again in August. Unfortunately I miss carried again and I’ve just had my second period and they have both been super lightLasting 2/3 days. My periods were completely normal before last 5-7 days normal flow. Has anyone else experienced this ?

so scared right now! Xx

Van30 · 01/11/2023 13:19

Aw so sorry to hear this. I had a missed miscarriage 2yrs ago and had really light periods after this, was certain I wouldn’t be able to conceive as they were so light. I’m 40 too so just thought everything was against me but I conceived naturally last year, pregnancy was fine and have a little one now who is doing well. So please don’t lose faith, it can happen just keep trying. Stress is a big thing and can impact our cycles too, although it’s natural to worry do focus on the fact it is possible and stay positive. Wishing you the best xx
