Pregnancy after 2 miscarriages

I had my daughter 3 and a half years ago. I fell pregnant really easily and had an uncomplicated pregnancy.

in the past year, I’ve had 2 miscarriages trying for my second. The first ended at 6 weeks. The second happened 5 weeks ago at 15 weeks.I was absolutely devastated as had been so relieved to get to the 12 week scan. I went in after some light bleeding and there was no heartbeat on the scan.

im looking for hope/advice. I’m so anxious this might happen again and desperate to have another baby. Has anyone had a similar miscarriage and did you ever get to the bottom of why or find anything that helped?

Thank you

Forgot to say I still don’t know why I lost my last baby. I’m awaiting the autopsy still. I have no health conditions and there were no abnormalities found on the scans I had in pregnancy or the tests they do at 12 weeks

Hey @MumofG I am so sorry to hear what you’ve been through. Make sure you look after yourself and give yourself time to process it all.
i have also had two miscarriages in the past 4 months (8 weeks and 6 weeks), I haven’t any children yet, it’s really knocked me and can’t quite believe I am the 5% of women who experience two consecutive ones.
However even tho the NHS advice is they look into reasons why after 3, my GP agreed to refer me and my local NHS trust has already scheduled a date early Sep at the recurrent miscarriage clinic, this has helped feel like I am doing something proactive in my journey for a healthy baby.
As your second loss was a 2nd trimester they should certainly refer you, so def ask for this as you can get a lot of support and testing now and also if you become pregnant again.
I would take hope in the fact that you have a daughter already, your body has done it before and can do it again 🌈
So sorry you have to wait for the autopsy but I hope the results give you some clarity and I that you have great support around you.

I’m so sorry for you too. It’s so heartbreaking. I hope you get your rainbow baby too. Unfortunately I’ve not been referred to a miscarriage clinic as in my trust they still have the policy of not all tests till you’ve had 3. I’’ paying for a consultation with a private obstetrician. Hoping that will get some answers. Best of luck to you and sorry again for your loss

Thank you! 🙏🏻🌈 ah shame your trust is strict with that policy, but hope your private consultation is helpful!

ready4rainbow · 23/08/2022 22:08

I've also lost 2 babies.
It's just heartbreaking isn't it.

Good luck to you both with your testing, unfortunately we can't afford to pay and my trust will only help after 3 losses.

Sorry for your losses. I've had 2 MC this year (March, 9w and June, 6w) and one before my DC1.which apparently doesn't count towards the 3 needed for support.

I spoke to my GP and asked for blood tests after my second MC of this year which they were happy to do for me to check thyroid and a few other things. Then found out I was pregnant again before I got the results - no major issues with blood results either.

Have a read of the PRISM study www.tommys.org/about-us/charity-news/prism-trial-bleeding-early-pregnancy-and-miscarriage

And also the NICE guidance

www.guidelines.co.uk/news/updated-nice-guidance-recommends-offering-progesterone-to-women-with-a-higher-risk-of-miscarriage/456597.article

As soon as I got BFP I asked my GP for Progesterone and was prepared to argue for it but GP willingly obliged and prescribed.

It's still early for me, 6w, but I definitely feel like I've done all I can to help support this pregnancy and there isn't any more I can do if I MC again.

Good luck in your journey

Oh my gosh @MumofG my heart goes out to you. So sorry for your losses ❤️. I have a couple of friends who had two miscarriages in a row ttc number 2, both went on to have healthy babies in the end. One friend had a private consultation after the second miscarriage and found out she had a blood clotting issue which can cause miscarriage, including in the second trimester. She needed to take some meds and then was able to sustain a healthy pregnancy. It could be something really simple like this for you too, or it could just be down to some really horrible luck- unfortunately miscarriages are so common 💔 . So glad you are getting a private consultation and hope you get some answers. The wonderful thing is you are able to get pregnant, so sooner or later you will get that sticky bean. Sending lots of love and baby dust 🧚🏻

I'm so so sorry for your losses.
I had two in a row last year too.
My gp sent me for blood tests and a uterus scan - took about three months in total but I fell pregnant for a third time just in time for this scan ...

There's a thread I was on il try and link which is similar to your situation and I took some advice from that.
I took double dose of folic acid for the first 12 weeks myself and also 75mg aspirin till just this week ( 36 weeks)

Third time lucky after two miscarriages? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/miscarriage/4399485-third-time-lucky-after-two-miscarriages

I hope the link works- I haven't done it before.

Sidonien · 24/08/2022 09:33

I also had two miscarriages when TTC DC2. In my case, I think stress had a lot to do with it. I was in a horrendous job where my hair was falling out. I quit the job and carried the next pregnancy to term. Good luck x

MumofG · 24/08/2022 09:51

@Doodledeedum so happy for you! And this definitely fills me with Hope thank you!

@MumofG oh I'm so glad ... im always scared to say what my situation is for fear of making someone else feel down but these kinds of threads were a godsend to me at my lowest points. I needed the hope and some answers from everyday women living out worst nightmares .

I took the aspirin initiative myself and told midwives I was taking it and why
Every single person ( baring one male consultant?!) told me it was ok and wouldn't do any harm to try it!

When I fell pregnant with this one I was bleeding and was told it was a blighted ovum but I thought it was way to early to tell me that so I held on and kept going for scans - turns out I just had a pocket of bleeding and that's what the blood was - the pregnancy was viable... ( at this point I was resigning myself to the fact it was a third MC and at the very least I'd begin getting answers)
This obviously wasn't the case and I've lived with a fear deep down ever since - I don't think it will pass till the baby is in my arms - but I know the fear is very real.

The thread I posted gave me a lot of hope.

With regards to investigation before a third ( unfortunately!!!) MC - I pushed my ( again female) GP for ANYTHING I could eliminate and where I am it was possible for her to send me for the blood tests to eliminate clotting and the scan to eliminate shape of uterus being a problem

My next step was going to be checking progesterone levels and seeking info and clarification on my NK cells.

All the best OP x

Margo34 · 24/08/2022 10:44

@Doodledeedum that's interesting about the aspirin and that everyone told you it was ok to take - my GP has said it's advised to be taken only between 8w-12w pregnancy so I've got another appt with my GP then to discuss taking a low dose of it then! So many people on here are given different medical advice in early pregnancy, no wonder it's such a minefield and so tricky for some of us there's just no consistenc!
Congratulations on your pregnancy, hope the 3rd trimester is treating you well 😊

Doodledeedum · 24/08/2022 10:58

@Margo34 everything I researched said you can take it up until week 37 ( I believe- obviously I'm not a medical consultant) but in my head I also thought- well two times I didn't take it- what the hey- everything says it doesn't harm.

I began taking it as soon as I knew I'd conceived but no sooner.

Even the doubling of folic acid. Wasn't advised but I knew it wouldn't do any harm and someone I know was prescribed a double dose after two MC so again thought sod it im going for it.

Thank you, it's been quite a journey but I've tried to love every minute of it

Margo34 · 24/08/2022 11:05

@Doodledeedum I'll ask my GP about it when I have my next appt and do some more research, it's good to know you can take it longer though, I did wonder what difference would taking it for just 4 weeks actually make!?! Thank you 😊
