Ovulation tests

Hello, so we've been trying for a few months for baby no. 2 but only properly using ovulation tests this month. Do you have to DTD before 'peak' or is their a chance of conceiving on the day? We DTD last night and this morning but by this evening my levels have gone straight back down. Any help is useful as I'm new to ovulation testing.
Thanks xx

On the day and soon after should be OK as the egg lives for around 12-24 hours waiting to be fertilised. At that point you are at the end of your fertile period - it is recommended you take advantage of the few days before you ovulate to DTD. I hear the clearblue ovulation strips are pretty good as they tell you when your LH begins to rise rather than just tell you when you're at your peak. Hope this helps and BABY DUST! xx

You get a positive OPK 24-28 hours before you ovulate. So the day of the peak is great so there's some swimmers there waiting for the egg as they can last 5 days.

With my DC we DTD, got a peak the next day and a positive 10 days later.

Ok thanks for the replies! So ideally DTD the day before peak and the day of?

Yeah. I think the best days are day before and 2 days before ovulation.

It takes about 30 mins for sperm to reach the egg and the egg lasts 24 hours. Ideally you will have sperm waiting for the egg to be released.

From what you have said it sounds like you have covered it.

Just so you know (in case you didn't) but the LH rises to signal an egg to be released but sometimes it doesn't. I have had multiple peaks before I actually ovulated so using OPKs doesn't guarantee you will ovulate. You need to temp to confirm ovulation really.

NatGee · 03/08/2022 22:00

@KatySp there are also pdg strip tests on the market to help confirm. I really had a hard time BBT tracking....

KatySp · 03/08/2022 22:04

@NatGee yes of course. Tbh I forgot about them because I thought they were expensive and where I get multiple peaks it wasn't worth it to me.

BBT I find is a habit. As soon as I wake I do my temp. I did it at midnight once because I was on auto pilot after DH woke me from a night out 🤣 my BBTs are all over the place but I can sort of see a pattern.

How did you find BBT hard? (Genuine question not a sarcastic one)

NatGee · 03/08/2022 22:08

@KatySp that's a good point, they are not the cheapest and for accuracy you must do them on 7DPO which becomes a bit of guesswork if you don't spot a peak in LH/ovulation. I bought them because I think I have anovulatory cycles so wanted to know as age is not on my side.
Oh yes of course - BBT i found to be a faff but I wonder if its because of the thermometer. I bought one especially and the thing just does not settle on a temp, it keeps oscillating between numbers. After the third day I lost my patience and tossed it aside 😖is there a thermometer you recommend? TIA

KatySp · 03/08/2022 22:15

I got a one called Femometer it was about £8. It beeps when it has finished reading the temp. Although this morning my temp was so low so I did it again and it was where it should be. I'm in the TWW (actually got a BFP this afternoon if you don't mind me saying). I hear some people recommend putting it in your mouth before starting to test. You just press a button then a few mins later it beeps to say it's done. Once it's beeped the temp doesn't move. Are you using a thermometer specific for BBT? I've been trying for 2 years and have used a couple in that time and they have always beeped and the temps stayed static in the display.

You can also try vaginal temping if you sleep with your mouth open (or want to try another way! but I don't bend that way so I never tried it 🤣

@may111 thank you very much. It's been 2 years and 5 losses so far so I'm cautiously excited but at the same time not Smile

Aw bless you, 🤞🏻🤞🏻 you deserve it xx

@may111 that's kind of you to say Flowers

NatGee · 03/08/2022 22:21

wow amazing! CONGRATULATIONs and after two years wow my sister in law tried for six 😱you ladies are amazing. Was it natural or did you have fertility treatments? how many days DPO are you and what test did you do? I am currently 12 and got a BFN this am.
Appreciate the recommendation, i feel a little sore about paying £14 for mine and forking out another £8. I have a much cheaper one that does exactly that, beep when its finished. so confused lol i need a class on how to use thermometers it seems 😅

I must admit I do get pregnant quickly but I have PCOS so last year I was ovulating ever 3 months but when I did I fell pregnant which then ended in a loss (nothing to do with PCOS). We sort of looked into IVF with a view to embryo testing but would have to pay privately and my consultant said it's all about getting the right egg/sperm combo so fingers crossed! The cost was like £10k+ and we already have a child so I couldn't justify that cost.

Since my daughter was still born in Feb I have been taking metformin and some other supplements and apart from this month I've had a regular cycle. I had my 5th loss in May and this month is all over the place. My BBT doesn't line up cos according to Fertility Friend (have you tried that by the way?)I am 7DPO but the line is too strong for 7DPO.

I use first response. They have always been good to me except last month I had a clear line but then I had them on easy@home too so maybe it was a chemical? But personally I recommend first response. If I don't have a line by 10DPO I consider myself out. I took an easy@home today and saw a faint line then did a first response and the line is clear to see.

With BBT testing you need to do it the same time each day but there is a site which amends your temp if you take it at a different time. Fertility friend will then automatically plot your lines according to ovulation. It takes into account EWCM and OPKs and is a good app to use if you are doing BBT. I can show you some of my graphs if you want.
