Zika, endometriosis, the trip of a life time & TTC

Hey there,

am a first time poster so please be nice.

my husband and I have finally decided after 14 years together to have our first baby. It’s a long story but I am really excited about the prospect of being a mum!

being us, we booked a baby moon to Mexico for day of the dead to tick one last thing off the bucket list but since I just found out about Zika still being a thing. So my initial thoughts were to postpone until next summer.

Most websites say if you are TTC to delay before and up to 3 months after returning. But in my research, I have found that Mexico has had just 3 cases this year- so there’s no outbreak. So the chances are extremely low and there’s been no reports of maternal transmission.

Another thing I have to consider is that am 33 and have endometriosis so getting pregnant may not be easy, it’ll be risky and I could end up going down the ivf route if I don’t conceive within 6 months of trying. So I don’t have a lot of time to really play round with even my consultant said “you need to shit or get off the pot” (which made me laugh 😆)

I am such a perfectionist and I feel almost as if I don’t do it soon I will just find another reason to postpone- I mean is there ever a perfect time to have a baby?

so I guess I have a few options:

  1. start trying and whatever will will be but if it were to happen soon I’ll be on the cusp of my second trimester in Mexico which is apparently slightly better for Zika risk.

  2. start trying in Mexico- the risk of Zika is low and get a Zika test for my husband and I when we return for peace of mind.

  3. wait until next summer even though it could take me ages to get pregnant and then cut it very finely to make the cut for nhs-ivf.

what do you all think 🧐

Hello! I ended up cancelling a summer holiday to Mexico in 2019 due to Zika after finding out I was pregnant with my first baby. In any trimester I just wouldn't run that risk! Equally I would take the advice and wait out the 3 months to try after travelling because again, there is a risk no matter how small the % sounds! You could always move your trip and travel to Mexico in the future?

Blueuggboots · 25/07/2022 15:01

In the nicest possible way, go on your holiday! You're not pregnant yet and could miss out on a great holiday.

DogsAndGin · 25/07/2022 15:01

Ask yourself: If you got pregnant, would you spend the whole 9 months panicking that the baby had Zika? Is it worth the stress? Even if baby doesn’t have Zika, would you be able to cope with the stress and the toll it would take on your pregnancy?

Thanks for the input everyone. Unfortunately I can’t move my trip 😪and if we could move it and we had a baby then I don’t think day of the dead is the best place for baby’s first holiday.

We had the same with going to Antigua for our honeymoon back in March. We are unable to naturally conceive so had to delay starting fertility treatment until 3 months had passed from our return as the all of the Caribbean has the same zika risk as Mexico. Antigua also hasn’t had active cases for a long time but the nhs won’t take that chance and make you wait. They won’t treat you if you’re going anytime during treatment or pregnancy so it is worth bearing that in mind!

rosiestraws · 26/07/2022 19:16

hiya just to add to pps comments- even private fertility places won't treat if you've been to Zika risk places within 3 months I think it is for women and I think 6 months for men- that was my experience and I've been having to avoid so many places when trying to find a holiday recently! :(

Whether you want to try naturally before you go is up to you. We all have our own risk levels etc

Pimbo89 · 27/07/2022 07:24

i have heard this, for me that would be at the end of our 6 month period of trying and the 3 wait post Zika.

i am sorry this happened to you though- I hope fertility treatment goes well for you x

I would just wait before trying. In the grand scheme (even the grand scheme of TTC with endo) it's not that long.

After an horrific year including two mc, DH and I booked a holiday to the Caribbean and of course found out I was pregnant again the day before we left. With everything else we had had to deal with, Zika hadn't even crossed my mind. It really put a cloud over the holiday because I wouldn't just ignore it and enjoy myself, I was so worried for the baby about how stupid I'd been. Fortunately I was able to have a blood test once I got home and all was fine, but if you're going to worry, don't do it.

Thank you for sharing & am so sorry you had such a bad year!

i am convinced you we will wait!
