When to take progesterone supplements/cyclogest after previous MC?

Hi everyone. I posted a similar thread a few days ago but wondering if there's anyone else who might be able to help as I'm struggling with making a decision!

I had my 3rd MC three weeks ago. I was prescribed cyclogest as went to my EPU with bleeding. Very sadly lost the baby the next day, I was 6.5 weeks.

I haven't yet had a period but I am pretty sure I ovulated on Wednesday so I am 2dpo now, and we DTD on Sunday, so definitely within fertile window. My questions are (if anyone can help):

  1. Should I start the cyclogest 3/4dpo in case I am pregnant, or should I wait till bfp? I haven't been diagnosed with low progesterone but I am breastfeeding my DD still and know this can lower it and think it could all be linked to my losses. The EPU said to take it from a BFP but I'm worried this will be too late. Is there ever a good reason to wait for a BFP (aside from potentially wasting the cyclogest?).
  1. Would there possibly be an issue with taking a hormone so soon after a miscarriage? Could it mess with me?
  1. Has anyone else done this i.e. conceived straight after MC without a period in between, and taken progesterone either after ovulation or BFP?

I'm really just looking for experiences and opinions, I'm really not sure what to do as so far I've had a mixed response from others on here and also via googling 😵 too much googling really.... Thank you 💓

Hi @Skylark1990 im in a very similar position to you and I wondered what you decided to do? Did you wait for a positive test (hope you got one 🤞) to start the progesterone or did you go from ovulation?x

Hello! @KG416 I did actually get a BFP, I was very surprised as didn't have any of my usual pregnancy symptoms. I tested at 11dpo and started the progesterone from there. I just felt weird taking it before I knew I was pregnant although I know many people do this! I took vitamin e, vitamin b6, vitamin c and ate lots of Brazil nuts which can also help build up lining in the two week wait 🥰 good luck! When are you testing? Is it also straight after a MC for you? Xx

Congratulations!! Oh I have everything crossed for you. How many weeks are you?

i had my 4th mc 3 weeks ago. (I had one before my DD and have had 3 since 💔) We have only DTD once this time and it was more a comfort thing (if you know what I mean) not sure when in my cycle so expecting my period this weekend. But I want to start trying again ASAP.
I was on Cyclogest for that last mc but I assume it all be out of my body by now. My DD was conceived straight after my first mc so I’m convinced it was because my progesterone levels were higher.
did you take those vitamins as well as folic acid? I’m taking the seven seas trying to conceive pills but will check what other vits they include. Also how did you keep track of your ovulation days? I have the clear blue tests so going to use them after my period comes but wondered if there’s something better to use.

Sorry for the long post. I hope you’re managing to enjoy these early days x

I'm so sorry to hear of your losses that must be really hard 💔😞. We are similar as I also have one DD then 3 mc now this pregnancy 🤞 really hope this is the one!

I ovulated 3 weeks approx after the MC started and two weeks after bleeding stopped. How many weeks were you when you miscarried? You may find you ovulate a bit later than usual unless it was a very early one before 5 weeks or so. Have you had any signs of ovulation?

That's interesting about your DD being conceived straight after MC, I've also heard that it can maybe increase progesterone so hopefully that helps us both!

I kept track of ovulation by doing opk tests and temping. I actually didn't track when we DTD a few times as we weren't technically trying but decided to check afterwards as wanted to know if there was a chance of pregnancy in order to test and start the progesterone if needed. so a couple days after we DTD I got a positive opk and then temping confirmed it for the day after that. So actually I ovulated 3 days after we DTD, so wasn't convinced at all I'd get pregnant. I hope it's a good sign that I did! A strong swimmer held out 😅

Have you been referred for tests at the recurrent miscarriage clinic yet? I recommend trying to go to a Tommy's clinic if you can. Call up a Tommy's midwife and speak to one, they're so helpful. The Tommy's miscarriage clinics often do more extensive tests and also the waitlist can be shorter. Have you also had the basic tests done via gp e.g hormone levels, vitamin D, thyroid, b12, iron, full blood count? Very important as sometimes it can be something quite simple that we can easily fix.

As for vitamins I'd recommend getting one that has the natural form of folate not folic acid (which is synthetic) as it's better absorbed. Also some people can't actually absorb folic acid at all due to their genetic make up so folate also avoids this potential issue . The brands I use are Terra Nova or Cytoplan. All the nutrients are from food so better absorbed. I think proceive multivitamins also have folate. You just need to check the ingredients.

A pregnancy multi will have most of the above vitamins etc in it but often not at the right levels for optimum fertility/ to prevent mc. So it can be good to take a few things in addition. Some good ones to take extra to help with fertility and hormones are vitamin D, omega 3, vitamin b6, vitamin c at 750mg per day during the tww, natural vitamin e, and maca powder. I also take iron as I'm a bit low and don't eat much meat. And Brazil nuts for natural selenium! Ofc do your research and decide what's right for you - a good diet with lots of veges and whole foods is also a great way of getting the right nutrients! I find it hard to be on that all the time with a toddler though 😂

Best of luck! Let me know how you get on x

Hello @Skylark1990 sorry for the slow reply. I got my period and have just been a bit low.
How are you? Is everything going ok? 🤞
I’ve had all the tests done and everything was normal. Except the specialist said looked like a progesterone supplement may help as the lining didn’t look as good as it should.
thanks for the all the info, it’s really helpful. I actually did contact Tommys and they said to phone any time I needed to talk. Im in Scotland so no local clinic unfortunately. But it’s funny I haven’t phoned, some days I feel desperate to speak to someone about it all and other days I can’t face the thought of it.
how are you doing? Are you coping ok with the torture that is the first trimester? I really hope all is well.
I did comment on another thread so that’s maybe where you recognise my name x
