39 y.o. & AMH 8.8pmol/L

Hi…

blood results yesterday revealed my AMH levels are low: 8.8 pmol/L. I’m 39 (40 in Jan) and have been advised to consider IVF.

I am feeling very sad today and having done some reading I fear IVF could be an expensive road to just more sadness. And all the clinics seem to sell different philosophies on the websites - it seems a minefield.

Has anyone had success in a similar situation to mine?

Thank you!

I’d also be interested to know if anyone has an opinion re natural IVF as advocated by Create?

thank you!

Hi,
Didnt want to read and run. I was 28 when I got an AMH result of 6.09PMOL, the consultant said that this was average for someone in their early 40s. I’d say for your age that 8.8 isn’t actually bad at all!
I had IVF - not natural IVF; was on the max dose of drugs and was successful first round. 5 months later I fell pregnant naturally.
AMH is an indicated of quantity not quality. My advice is to do all you can to maximise egg quality - supplements, little alcohol, remove BPA. Read ‘It starts with the egg’ for guidance on what you can do to increase quality.

If you’ve been trying for a while with no success then go for IVF but don’t write yourself off due to your AMH. Hope that helps.

I meant to say I got pregnant naturally when my DD was 5 months!

I am 40 and my AMH in January (when I was 39) was 9.5. The consultant said it was worth giving it a go naturally for 6 months or so before attempting IVF. Sadly it hasn't worked and we'll be looking at IVF soon. But he didn't seem to think 9.5 was horrendous for 40. He advised me what supplements to take to try and improve egg quality etc so I've been taking those. Sorry I can't give you a success story but I'm still a little bit hopeful I'll get there. (I am very aware the odds are against me).

I was 28 when consultant told me my AMH was low and the same of someone in their mid 40s (can't remember the number exactly but it was below 10).
Went on to conceive DD aged 29 and now pregnant with my second at 30. Both conceived naturally. I've also had a few MCs so AMH obviously had no effect on me conceiving. Best of luck and don't be too disheartened by that figure. I will add it took us 18 months to conceive DD which is why we were seeing a fertility consultant.

Thanks everyone - I really appreciate the encouraging responses. I’ve bought the It Starts with The Egg book and will get reading….. I’ve also made an appointment to talk about ivf although am honestly hoping we can get pregnant without it….. fingers crossed. They’re crossed for you too @Oobydo ! I hope you’re all having lovely weekends! x
